I got lucky and found someone special online. He was actually my second date, but we both wanted to date others. Next, I narrowed the list down to the top ten things and eventually to the top five most important to me, which included humor, being open-minded, liking animals, enjoying nature, but not a rabid sports enthusiast (met a few of those and didn't work out), and TRULY spiritual, but not religious! It doesn't have to five...that was just my choice. Once I did this, it didn't take long for me to realize I had already met this man on my second date! Fortunately, we stayed friends and have now been together for 4 years. I believe you CAN use online dating to meet someone, but it's important to do your homework about what you REALLY want in a long term partner.
