Miley Cyrus Sexy Vanity Fair Pics – She’s Younger Than My Daughter

Miley Cyrus cute pic with puppy dogFamed photographer Annie Leibovitz recently shot Miley Cyrus for Vanity Fair, and the resulting pictures aren’t surprising. After all, Leibovitz is well known for other female celebrity pics she’s shot. Who can forget the photo of Demi Moore pregnant and nude, Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley nude with Tom Ford, or Demi wearing nothing but a bodypainted suit?

So when I saw the photograph of Miley in satin bed sheets, bare back, sexily messy hair, I was fairly non-plussed. She’s a celebrity singer/actor likely trying to dispel her good-girl Disney image to attract a wider audience and land adult acting roles. I’m not immune to the idea of broadening a demographic base. And it wasn’t like she was totally buck naked.

But then I realized – Miley Cyrus is younger than my daughter.

What message does this bedroom shot send to high school girls? Will my daughter, 16 years old and a Hannah Montana fan, doubt herself and wonder whether she’s taking things too slowly with boys her age? After all, she’s only recently started hanging out with boys, testing the waters with harmless flirting. I know she’s more woman than child, but I’d like for her to mature at her own pace.

I’m certainly no prude, as any Dad’s House reader can attest. I’ve had my share of hookups, booty calls and one night stands. But I’m an adult. When I was my daughter’s age, I was happy to simply make out with my girlfriend under the bleachers. We weren’t waking up together in satin sheets.

I know some high school kids are having sex, just look at pregnant Jamie-Lynn Spears. But Jamie-Lynn never missed curfew, she probably snuck off with her boyfriend for romps during the day. It wasn’t like they were sleeping over. And she did her deeds in private – she didn’t pose naked in bed for publication in a national magazine.

Miley Cyrus is already the richest child celebrity with a $1 billion franchise. If she feels the need to up her game and grab an even bigger share from a more adult pie, that’s her business. But couldn’t she have done so without thumbing her nose at the very fans who made her rich? Her bedroom pics tell the world she’s no longer a kid.

I’m disappointed in Miley Cyrus. And for now I’m keeping my daughter in cotton sheets.

  1. As a mom, I believe parents have to set certain standards and boundaries. Will teens break ‘em? You bet. But, we do it anyway.

Miley and her parents agreed to be photographed and, I am assuming how and what would be photographed would have been discussed in advance, when the releases were signed, If it wasn’t, they are damn fools.

Celebrities travel in a different circle — world, actually! — than we do, but parents are still parents. Ultimately, they have the right to say yes or no, especially with a minor. Once those satin sheets came out, I would have asked, “Um, and what are those for?”

I’m no prude, either, and I often feel like it’s a losing battle to address the hypersexualized society we live in with our kids, but that’s our job.

  2. If she wasn’t fifteen, I would say those photos were gorgeous. If you forget her age, they certainly are. I appreciate the lighting and background and the smooth young skin. I’d be worried if my daughter were in those photos, primarily because they represent her to the outside world. It doesn’t send the right message. Which is something I try really hard to teach her. Be yourself. But have class too. It’s a hard line to follow for young ladies, I’ll admit. Be pretty, but not sleazy. Be coy, but not too flirtatious.
I was SO glad to hear your daughter still likes HM. I was worried that maybe the older girls weren’t about it-and Miley’s messages are actually very positive. Her song lyrics are GOOD role models.

  4. i like the pic with her dog much better then her trying to be grownup. i’m glad now that my daughter never cared for milly sirius.

  5. Is it just me, or does she look like like a vampire who recently sucked the life out of someone. I don’t know what it is about these pics. But the color of her skin (greyish) mixed with the blood tinged lips-look kinda distract me from the whole 15 yr old thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t understand why anyone would want to see a 15 year old trying to be sexy. Maybe in like, 3 or 4 more years, but now? Its just weird.

  6. I’m so glad you’re addressing this David, I haven’t been able to put my thoughts together. My 8-year-old daughter idolizes Miley.

At first, I couldn’t stomach her or the show — I didn’t want to my 2nd grader swallowing all this teen talk — but after watching many, many episodes I saw that she really has a genuine, kind role on the show. She’s not mean-spirited.

Anyway, I’ve been following all the hoopla about the pics. Supposedly, her parents were on the set in order to supervise. I wonder where they were when she started to take her clothes off… I’m not moralistic in any way, but I do think this changes Miley’s image 180 degrees. She could have done a “grown up,” actress look without disrobing.

I heard Miley’s apology on the radio; is it all a media ploy? I’m simply astounded by the $$ she rakes in. Whoa. Okay, my rant is over.

  7. I don’t like this. In my opinion, this is a very OBVIOUS sexual pose. Come on, she is naked, holding a sheet up, with messy hair, like she just had sex. Or wants some. Gross. She’s a child.

  8. I’m not sure this means anything at all. She elected to model for an artist for pictures in a magazine that none of her age-appropriate fans would ever buy or read. Her parents were involved in the shoot (although apparently Billy Ray left the room and Annie took this bed shot). Disney (much as I love them) is an insulating sub-culture, and it’s shocking to see the kid stars outside of Disney’s arms. But step back from that shock and evaluate it a little bit. This isn’t a “would you want your kids doing it” kind of issue (because you aren’t in Billy Ray’s shoes and what’s a good choice for your kids may not be for his and vice versa). Nor is it a “would you want your kids to see it” kind of issue (because they aren’t reading Vanity Fair). This picture isn’t going to inspire teens to go out and have sex. It’s not even a drop in the bucket of the teen sex drive. If there is any issue here at all it is the very small issue of whether or not that picture was taken with parental permission.

  9. Two things - 1) my daughter had already heard about the pics from her friends talking at high school, and 2) I subscribe to Vanity Fair, as do my parents, and my daughter usually flips through each issue. She’ll see the pic.

If it was an adult posing like that (Madonna, Scarlett Johansson, J-Lo), I wouldn’t care, it’s not that revealing. But it’s a 15 year old girl in bed looking like she just had sex. In my opinion, not appropriate for a national publication. That it’s a girl who has made $1 billion dollars pedaling a “good girl” image to kids makes it even more disappointing to me.

  10. Meh, it’s yucky. The photos are over the top sexually. I just hope she goes the way of Hillary Duff and not Lindsey Lohan.

  12. My younger sister is not yet 18. My daughter is almost 6. Both Hannah Montana fans. My sister thought that the picture was a little overly sexual and that her parents should have had the gumption to stand up and say something.

My daughter, at almost 6 years old, asked why Hannah Montana was in a picture with no clothes on. “Is she ready for bed?” She (thankfully) doesn’t yet see the sexual side of it.

I don’t believe Miley posed for this picture in a sexual way, but rather that idea has been projected onto the picture. The broo-haha over this photo shoot is amazing. Her parents need to take more responsibility for the outcome.

  13. I have to agree the pic was totally inappropriate for a 15 yr old, especially considering her fan base. It just sets the wrong example to millions of little girls. I imagine many parents are out there trying to put an inncoent spin on the pic to their kids.

But is she the blame? I don’t think so. I think the photographer, despite her insistence that it was “artistic”, the magazine, and her parents are the ones who should have had more descretion than they displayed by printing a pic like that. I just don’t understand some of these artists who feel there has to be some sort of sexual undertone for a pic to be “art”…

This reminds me of Brooke Shields many years ago when she posed for some risque photos while she was a child. If I recall correctly, I think there was more uproar at that time than there is now with this pic. How times change..and not necessarily for the best…

  15. Dude, I have to agree totally. I don’t follow pop culture and barely know who Cyrus is, but those pics are disgusting. In no way, shape, or form do I think she is attractive. Unfortunately, she probably has 100 people telling her what to do, so her decisions are likely heavily influenced.

  16. I wasn’t sure I knew what to think about the pictures and the ensuing flap, but then I came a similar realization you did - likely with the same length of time it took you to - and it startled me mightily.

I guess it’s about taking the opportunity to have a discussion with my daughter about the issues it represents. That’s the only thing we can do about it.

  17. it amazes me that we live in a world where children are starving everyday and you people find this important enough to run with she is a pretty girl and it’s not like you can see anything but her back I am ashamed to be an American and live with such stupid people.

Comment by robert Renner | May 10, 2008

  18. Mr. Renner - sorry you think we’re stupid. I’m actually very well educated. I find it ironic that you found my blog important enough to comment on when there are starving children. But thanks for your thoughts.

btw - if you read my post, you’d see it’s not about her bare back, it’s about the satin sheets and just-had-sex look of a child who is a role model to children.

Maybe you can get Miley to give some of her $1 billion dollar good-girl franchise to help starving children. Might be more worth your while than name-calling here.

  19. I am a Hannah Montana fan my self but I think that Miley never should have agreed to do this shoot. I don’t know what she was thinking. I mean she has so many little kids that look up to her and then she does this. Both parents were there at the photo shoot and the call the pictures and I quote “innocent” I think not. But what I do think is she just wanted to get back together with nick and she thought these pictures would make him go back to her.
