Gimlet Recipe – Friday Night Cocktails
(For the gimlet recipe, scroll down.)
Last month on a Friday night my brother and his wife set up chairs and a card table on their front lawn and fixed themselves cocktails. Curious neighbors coming home from work stopped by and asked, “What’s the occasion?”
“It’s Friday,” my brother said. “Want a martini?”
And so started a neighborhood tradition. Families now take turns on Friday nights hosting drinks in the front yard, everyone trying to out-do the previous week’s host in quality or uniqueness. This gimlet cocktail recipe is one such drink.
Wouldn’t you know, it’s Friday. Maybe I’ll try that tonight in my neighborhood. Anyone for a Gimlet?
Gimlet recipe:
5 parts Plymouth Gin
2 parts Rose’s lime
Pour into a glass with ice. Stir. Garnish gimlet glass with a slice of lime.

That sounds fabulous. What time should I be there?

WOW. Now that’s an idea. I think most people in my neighborhood would point and stare. But hell, it’s a martini! Anyone cool wouldn’t pass that up! :)

I’d like to start something similar on my front porch, where we sit around and “solve” the world’s problems over a bottle of wine. Call it “The Round Table.” Sounds like fun.
Be well.

Cool!! What can I bring :) I am always up for a Martini!!
Wish I could do that…but living in a highly trafficked streen in San Fran it would be interesting. I dont think I have enough room for all of the shopping cart parking :)
Sometimes the parents will bring down six pack and snacks to the playground on Friday afternoons though…

Love gin. Such an under-rated liquor!

What I wouldn’t give for a front porch, cool breeze, nice temperatures, glass of wine, good company, and attractive men…*sigh*
It is summer time once again!

Happy Hour is 5 o’clock. Or whenever you all get here! Gimlet cocktails all around.
A bottle of wine is always good. Gin is indeed under-rated. My local BevMo told me they’re going to stop carrying Plymouth Gin. Gimlet lover that I am, I promptly bought their last case and am looking for a new supplier. [Ed. Note: they saw my gimlet and martini enthusiasm for Plymouth, and kept stocking it for me]
Doug – I’m not sure which image is funnier, the shopping carts parked in front of your place, or the parents sipping booze at the playground (out of brown bags? or was it a gimlet?)
Everyone – Happy Friday!

I can just see it….all the shopping carts lined up. Free booze!!!
We dont bother with brown paper bags. Could you see someone trying to call the cops? Hi…there are a bunch of parents at the kids only playground drinking beers and having snacks while watching their kids play. On a Friday afternoon in SF that would be a pretty low priority call for the cops.
I wish today was nicer. I would be out there with a six pack and hummus and pita. Just not a great day.

Forgot…especially with today being critical mass…
Rule is Dad gets his butt home asap after the pickup at pre-school. No messing with the massholes…it is just getting worse and worse.

Gin – that’s great! I heard some heathens tried vodka for gimlets. You’re definitely on the right track to neighborhood happiness.

Wow, I’m jealous. If I went and hung out at my next door neighbor’s house any night during the week I can have my pick of Schlitz beer and Colt 45. If it was a really special night for me, perhaps they’d let me choose which of the four BBQ’s in their front yard I could cook my chicken on.
The only saving grace for my hood is that it’s 5 minutes from the beach.

What a great idea. My neighborhood does something similar — we have “happy hours” on Friday evenings in the summer, hosted by a different family each week. Everyone is supposed to brink a snack to share and a drink for themselves, though I often can’t resist mixing up a big batch of some cool drink to share.
Speaking of cool drinks, I love gimlets, of both the gin and the vodka variety. They are very tart because of the Rose’s, but that just keeps things interesting.

Friday Night Cocktails update:
So far, we’ve worked our way through five houses and Martinis, Margaritas, Sea Breezes, Mojitos, and Pimms Cups. We still have at least two more houses planning to host, then it comes back to us. Gin Gimlets would be an EXCELLENT choice when it’s our turn again. Otherwise we’ll probably serve up Sidecars.
I used to have trouble finding Plymouth, so I asked the local mini mart, and bless them – they special ordered it. Now they stock it regularly and it seems to sell well. Can’t beat that $22 price point!

What a great blog! Our group has been having Friday Gimlet Night in Swarthmore, PA for the last nine years. It’s always a nice gathering of people!
