Cocktails and Booty – Ironman Rocked!

Ironman movie 2008 with Robert Downey, Jr.I finally saw Ironman (you can get the Iron man DVD here, or watch it on demand. Do it now. It’s good. No, it’s friggin’ unbelievable. Don’t believe me? Ha. Read on…)

Wow, great flick! And to think I almost missed it. After all, it’s a kid movie (so I thought.) And my kids saw it with their friends during custody time with their mom. (Single parents with shared custody have to call dibs on certain summer movies. Batman Dark Knight is mine!)

Back to Ironman – this film was decidedly not just for kids. As a Silicon Valley single dad who dates, there were several elements I totally related to:

Cocktails – Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) loves his drinks, especially when chilled in a bullet-proof chest suitable for any combat zone.

Booty – Stark makes quick work of an attractive female reporter (loved those boy shorts!) In finest bachelor form he ushers her off before morning sex. Granted, he didn’t do it himself, but at least he didn’t text her!

Quick Wit – with director Jon Favreu of Swingers fame, did you expect anything else?

Mega Brains – Stark is the ultimate bad-ass technologist. And just like Silicon Valley greats, he works out of his garage!

Rockstar Ego – Stark is a confident stud, and Ironman is even studlier. What’s not to like? Every guy would dream of this life.

Add a theme song by Black Sabbath, and voila – a classic. The only thing missing was a dad. Oh wait, here’s Ozzy Osbourne. Isn’t he a patriarch?

Buy the Ironman DVD! It rocks. And it’s one of those movies to watch more than once.

  1. Total agreement here! I saw it twice. The second time was even better! And we stayed through the credits to see the little (and I mean LITTLE) extra scene.

    Super good movie!

  2. Anything with Robert Downey, Jr. and you have hooked me. That’s what got me, finally, into Ally McBeal, back in The Day…

And some Metal to boot. I have two free movie tickets. Was going to spend them on Sex and the City. Will I have to re-think that?

    Be well, Daddy-o.

  3. I loved IronMan….I noticed way different details…with the exception of him working in his garage…THAT I caught….just wasn’t quite the same type of garage…

  4. Um…I love RDJr. I loved him since “Less Than Zero” and (shameful pout)I even sent him an encouraging letter while he was in rehab. I wasn’t planning on seeing it, but you said “wit” and “booty” with Robert? Done and done.

  5. Yes. Iron Man was very good. I don’t usually like films based on comic books, but Iron Man is definitely the first exception.

  6. This movie was obviously for adults, NOT children. At least not those under 13. It definitely wasn’t appropriate or intended for children any younger.

  7. I can’t wait to see it!
I always call dibs on movies with my daughter-I got Narnia last weekend.
I want the Hulk too, but she definitely can’t watch that. My husband doesn’t like superhero movies, comic book style stuff or stupidly funny things like Superbad, Napoleon Dynamite or Old School. It’s too bad these things come out once you are already married. :(

  8. Love the song….LOVE Robert Downey Jr….. did not love the movie (it woulda’ been a renter for me)…but I LOVE my son, so we saw it on the big screen…..he loved it :)

  9. I haven’t seen the movie but I would guess it’s NOT for kids. Your review confirms that for me.

  10. I believe the movie is rated PG13, and that’s appropriate. I remember while watching it thinking that 7 year olds shouldn’t see it. I had no problem with my 12 year old son seeing it. A 9 or 10 year old? Hmm… A parent’s guide is here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0371746/parentalguide

Shannon – Napolean Dynamite is awesome! I’ve seen it 4 times. We made my mom watch it with us once, and she didn’t crack a smile the whole time. But then the next morning, she was cracking up thinking about it. She said, “that movie reminded me of you boys growing up.” Now you all know what my high school days were like! (Ever notice everything in that movie gives a nod to 1982? The music, the time machine, the shirts and posters and clothes… )

  11. I wanted to see Ironman but I went to the theater on the night “cougars in the city” debuted so there was no frackin’ place to park. I saw a band instead. Now I can’t see it until it comes out on DVD…

  12. I think the PG-13 was probably appropriate. A 1st or 2nd grader would probably get the captivity and prisoner sequences in a general way, but wouldn’t get all the details. The movie was pretty careful not to be graphic about anything – not the drinking, not the casual sex, not even the violence. It was entertaining on many levels – those watching for it would find the developing Pepper Potts – Tony Stark relationship pretty satisfying, while others would overlook anything happening at all. Obadiah Stain (what a character name!) was a bad guy, but the film wasn’t graphic about his dirtiest deeds.

I worked at our local theater while Ironman showed. The audience got bigger the last couple of weeks, as adults and couples got the word it was an entertaining story.

I loved the “10% thruster” test, and the robot with the extinguisher. And the icky loose wire.

  13. I was a little comic-book-movie’d out when my boyfriend wanted to go see this, but we went. I was absolutely surprised by how witty it was, how much I was into the story. Unfortunately, some woman in the row in front of me kept laughing at every little funny moment like a braying donkey. I need to watch this again!

  14. Jaclyn – yes, go see it again!

Like you, I was a bit comic-book’d out before I saw it. Though I do like the new Batman Dark Knight movies. They have a darker tone, and Christian Bale is spot on perfect. I can’t take another Spiderman!

Iron Man had some great one-liners, and Robert Downey Jr. delivered them to perfection. (I’m a sucker for quick throw-away lines. Loved Zoolander and Talladega Nights. Some lines flew by so fast, I was the only one in the theatre laughing. At least I didn’t bray like a donkey)

  15. My favorite quote from the movie… or rather the one that had me laughing the most… was when he said (to excuse his running late)”I was doing a piece for (whatever magazine she was with)” That was funny! My 9 year old couldn’t understand why all the adults were laughing at that one.
    Great movie, I loved it!
