Wow, I just read your "matchmakers" piece on the SVMB, and my jaw dropped at some of the harsh comments! Kudos for coming back with another great piece, and, btw, I don't think there's anything wrong with asking to be set up. My husband asked his buddy, also my friend, to introduce us in high school -- and we're still going strong almost twenty years later. That said, my brother met his girl on eHarmony, which is also where one of my college pals met his now-wife and where a former coworker met her intended... So I'm not so sure the stats are as bad as you think. That said, I'd rely on a friend's intro any day over something virtual! Great posts -- look forward to meeting you in SV (I'm moving my house and my posts to SVMB next month).

Cathouse Teri - cycling is the sort of conversation a dad should have outside the delivery room while mom's in labor, no?

(I'm actually on the fence about the dad-in-the-delivery-room debate. I was there for both my kids, and I really enjoyed it once, and felt out of place the second time)

I'm doing the San Luis Obispo Lighthouse Century. I'm in the Los Angeles area, my friends are in the Bay Area so we picked something central. I wasn't ready in May for the Solvang Century, but maybe next year!

Good to know that you generally stick with a hilly 60 or less during training and are able to go 100 on the day of the ride. Maybe I won't go for more distance and will just try to feel more comfortable with the distances I'm already doing. And see if eating and drinking more helps. Thanks!

I was in the Bay Area over the weekend and did some awesome rides--one in Marin and one in the Santa Cruz mountains. It is so hot down here these days and the weather was perfect there. I'm envious!

Hadley - wow, which century are you doing? Century rides are a blast.

For marathon running I have a rigorous training regimen that goes from hills to speed work to distance, peaking three weeks before race day.

For cycling a century, though, I just put in lots of miles. If you're doing 70 in training, I think you'll squeeze out those last 30, no problem. You might be dragging, but that's half the fun. My cycling training rarely goes over 60 miles, but I do lots of hills (Santa Cruz mountains, Alice's restaurant, can't be beat) so my legs stay strong.

If you really want to do 100 before the actual ride, just make sure you eat and drink plenty during the ride. I've done the Solvang Century a few times, and they offered food stations with peanut butter sandwiches, fig newtons, gatorade, water, peanuts, M&M's, and fruit like pineapple, cantelope, oranges, bananas. Eat, eat!

Off topic, but I'd like to ask anyway: what's your routine for preparing for a century ride? I'm doing my first one in September with some friends who are also first-timers. I'm up to 70 miles in my training and really enjoying it, but can't imagine how I am going to stay on the bike for 30 more miles! I plan to keep at it with weekly incremental increases...beyond that, any advice?
