Thursday Night Cocktails – Cosmopolitan Recipe
Thursday night is always a great night for a cocktail. (Actually, any night is. But I digress…) I try not to gender stereotype, but tonight’s cocktail tends to have a girlie reputation. Cosmos are that pink drink that so many girls-night-out women adore. As a man, I typically won’t order one in a bar. A three-olive martini not only gives me a stronger image, it usually hits the spot.
But at home, with dinner guests, I’ll shake up some Cosmos, no problem. The key is using Cointreau instead of Triple Sec, and not just for the liqueur’s Global Brand Ambassador. I also use a bit more cranberry juice than some other recipes – it gives the Cosmopolitan more color and tang. As for vodka, there are so many flavors mixed in this drink, I’m not sure the brand matters. I drink Ketel One, and keep a big bottle of it in my freezer.
Glass chilling tip – fill martini glasses with ice and water before you mix the cocktail in a shaker. The glasses will be plenty cold when you’re ready to pour.
Cosmopolitan Recipe
2 parts vodka
1 ½ parts cranberry juice
1 part Rose’s lime juice
1 part Cointreau
Shake sharply with ice
Pour into a chilled martini glass

I love to drink. I know it is poison for the system and I should not do it, but everything in moderation, right?
I really enjoy what I call the Dirty Russian. Some call it the orgasm. It is a cross between with White Russian and Dark Russian.
1 part Vodka
1 part Irish Cream Liquor
1 part Coffee Liquor
Chill in a tumbler and crack out the Brazilian jazz tunes…

I LOVE a good cosmo! I have to agree with you on it being a girl drink, if I was out with a guy who ordered one, I would definitely think twice about date #2.

I couldn’t agree more about any night being right for a cocktail. Hard to go wrong with a martini, or just bourbon on the rocks.
Keeping with the notion of a richly red cocktail, last night I came up with this one, like a sangria on steroids:
1 1/2 oz Absolut Mandrin vodka
2 oz ruby port
Grapefruit soda (such as Izze or Fresca)
Stir vodka and port in a highball glass with crushed ice. Top with grapefruit soda and give another quick stir. Garnish with a blood orange wheel.
Cheers!

Kevin, that drink sounds delightful! (But then anything with Irish Cream is magic)

Now we’re talking. I love Cosmos! My first martini was a straight up vodka martini with a twist. Then I was introduced to this beautiful concoction. I love most martinis actually.
I’ve always been a vodka drinker and generally my drink of choice is a Vodka Tonic. Somewhere in college I earned the nickname “Vodka Tonya” due to one too many vodka tonics and an evening that I don’t recall. I actually have to stop myself when I order one… I find myself saying “Vodka Tonya” instead.
My favorite vodka in a Cosmo: Absolut Citron and Cointreau is a MUST! (I also love Cointreau in my margaritas.)
My favorite vodka in general: Tito’s (distilled right here in Austin, TX and SOOOOO smooth!!) I’ve noticed when I go to a bar and ask for Tito’s, the bartender is always impressed. I guess its not only MY favorite but theirs as well. Look it up: http://www.titos-vodka.com/titos.html

I can’t believe I’ve never had a martini.
Does that make me a martini-virgin?
But Kevin’s orgasm–yep, back in my Sweet Tooth days that was to die for. So I guess ‘virginity’ is all relative…JA!
Be well. Happy Friday to you!
