What Men Think About Luxury Fashion
David Mott is on vacation this week, but he invited his favorite bloggers to take over Dad’s House while he’s gone. Today What Men Think pokes around the walk-in closet…
Jimmy Choo Pumps. $600
Louis Vuitton Hand Bag & Wallet. $2500
Chanel Sunglasses. $300
True Religion Jeans. $250
Ed Hardy Basic Tee. $60
Tiffany & Co Pendant. $950
Victoria’s Secret Bra & Panty $75
Dior Watch. $1800
Total? $6535
This would be the average of what I see on Rodeo Dr. or Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles, California. Fortunately, most of America isn’t like Los Angeles. Unfortunately, this is a pretty thrifty outfit for many in Hollywood (including the men).
If I didn’t have to dress up for my business, I would wear a plain T-Shirt and Jeans/Shorts most of the time. Men are simple when it comes to fashion. We like simplicity and comfort. I state on my “About the Blogger” section that I like “back to basics fashion”. I think that a healthy body looks great in a pair of blue jeans a simple white t-shirt. Health and simplicity is a timeless fashion. I see a lot of women get preoccupied with the latest trends and designer goods.
Sadly, the truth about, “What men think about luxury fashion?”
Answer, “Huh?” Don’t ask a man about women’s fashion.
Can I get an amen?

Simple and well fit is sexy – whether it is jeans and T or a suit. Simple, comfortable, and sexy… what more is there? I have heard that men, if given a choice, prefer the same look on women – simple. Thoughts? But then again, I have also heard that women spend that money and wear the clothes for other women more than for men?

I’d add one thing to simple and comfortable…things need to fit. And designer things do…though you should also make friends with your tailor.

Well it seems to me that the women of Hollywood also agree in simplicity and comfort. According to the snapshots I see of them out and about town in their daily lives. Only when attending an event of some kind are they dressed to the nine-thousands. The rest of their time is apparently spent looking like hobos.

The women you may be referring to that are “preoccupied with the latest rends and designer goods” are probably not single moms paying mortgages, daycare, groceries and gas. Wow, either I am so out of touch with the reality of fashion, or people living in LA are out of touch with the average cost of a mortgage. As a single mom with a great career, I am still on a budget to make ends meet and live in a nice neighborhood. That list has absolutely no relevance to my life! I shop the sales at Talbots, the outlet stores, and the great brand name stuff at TJ Maxx. A $600 pair of shoes is so not even on my radar, it’s not even in my vocabulary. Thank God I don’t need them to feel sexy.

The Exception:
If it is true that women compete with each other in fashion, I find that very immature and wasteful…
Honey:
ABSOLUTELY. Its not about FIT. It is all about FITMENT! Hmmm I’m upset I forgot to mention that.
Cathouse Teri:
Not true. Those celebrities that appear in tabloids looking like hobos are usually just tired from working so much. If you go to dinner at Spagos or have lunch at the IVY, the ladies are dressed to impress.
Single Mom in New England:
LA people are out of touch. However, many younger women strive to emulate that behavior. Not all single mother’s are as savvy and intelligent as yourself. )And YES, I am implying that seeking after luxury fashion goods is stupid. It is financially wasteful.)

AMEN!!!!!!
There is nothing sexier than a woman in a pair of jeans and a tight tank top.
All this high fashion crap is out of contol.
I love your blog and have added you to my blogroll. Hope you visit.

Those numbers you listed are a little out of control, but I certainly understand why high value women would wear quality, expensive clothes. I like a gal in jeans and a tank also, but I ain’t gonna lie…I like her a lot more when she’s dressed up. It’s SEXY.
Not only that, but I personally like wearing nice clothes. I like to stand out when I go out and I also try my best to present well and put my best foot forward. I’m not a fashion plate, but I get how fashion is helpful in social situations.

I agree that fashion is important. However, fashion doesn’t need luxury brands. I used to own a business that manufactured apparel and I can tell you that you can find high-quality products at a good price if you know what to look for. Luxury goods are over inflated in price and wasteful. Nothing wrong with being fashionable, but there is something wrong with becoming obsessed with luxury fashion goods.

I only meant that when they are just living their daily lives, they dress rather sloppily, in my opinion. When out to lunch or dinner, of course they dress up.
Then again, even their sloppy dress costs a fortune.

“High value women” Wow…
I am glad that, as a scientist and an outdoor enthusiast, I live in a world where a woman’s value and sexiness isn’t so tied up with wearing expensive clothes and accessories. To each his/her own. Dressing up is fun from time to time but I certainly don’t associate it with someone’s value or how much I like them. Different strokes for different folks.
Nice post, whatmenthink!

Cathouse Teri:
Those tabloid pictures are not the norm. The tabloids take tons of pictures and publish the ones where the celebrities look the worst. I’m also talking about the non-celebrities that live and work in LA. Even remotely affluent people go to great lengths in order to have the newest luxury fashion goods. Fly out to Los Angeles and see how busy the Beverly Center or Rodeo Drive are during the weekday.
Hadley:
Thank you.

And that’s why we should all walk around naked.
Um, not!
I don’t have a job in which I could afford those things, and even if I did I wouldn’t spend that kind of money. I do, however, take pride in how I look and I like to dress in a way that’s “me.” I shop at resale and quality discount stores at which you can find well-made clothes for cheap. In fact, that’s the fun part for me; finding something fantastic for nothing.
And, I could never be with a man who wanted me to look like anyone from LA.

I have to agree with whatmenthink on this. Living in San Diego it seems as though a lot of people here go to great lengths to try to look like our neighbors to the north in Hollywood whether they can afford it or not. That’s what credit is for.

Great read… I guess this is why I have to dress my husband?
One thing I would like to point out is luxury is not only about high dollar fashion especially with all the eco friendly options availible today. Sometimes it is about comfort.
A stylish organic 100% super soft cotton tee doesnt come cheap!
Thanks for the read … oh yeah … I almost forgot, “Amen!”
