Just For Men

Single dads have gone mainstream. There’s a TV commercial with two young girls encouraging their dad to get back in the dating game.

Kind of cute and sweet, I suppose. But when I first saw this spot during the Tour de France, my gut reaction was: are they serious? Here I break it down (tongue in cheek):

  • Why are young kids coaching their dad to get out there and date? If they were twenty and in relationships of their own, I could believe it. But these kids are eight. Maybe the ad agency thought the movie Billboard Dad was a documentary.
  • Why is the dad texting a photo of his hottie dinner date to his girls? Once again, save it for when your kids are twenty. Or at least wait till you’ve been dating that woman a while and your kids are teens.
  • Why don’t his kids accept him for who he is? I mean, they’re saying he’s not desirable to women until the gray is gone from his hair? What about baldness? Being overweight? Being too thin? What happened to inner beauty?

I ran this by my teenage daughter: if I had gray hair, would you do that for me?

Her response speaks volumes:

No, Dad, I wouldn’t. If my uncle had gray hair, I’d get him a box. But if it was you? I’d tell you to get off your lazy butt and go buy some product!

Enough said.

  1. Your daughter is too funny!

  2. Why are young kids coaching their dad to get out there and date?

Because sometimes, even instinctively, kids know their dad needs to get laid.

  3. Beth – yep, she’s a funny girl.

PJ Momma – teens, sure. But eight year olds? I’m now picturing your little ones in the PJ Momma household getting out the lingerie and scented candles and saying “mom, it’s time! You need to get some!” Hahaha :-) (I know PJ Momma can take the teasing, I wouldn’t dish it otherwise)

  4. When I was single my two teenage daughters thought it was their duty to make sure their dad “picked the right one”. I’d find them constantly looking over my shoulder while on eHarmony or Match.com, making comments about this one or that one. Strange uh!!!

  5. Ah, from the mouths of babes…

At least she isn’t breaking out the Just For Men now–that would hurt.

Kids seem to have an instinct for basic human needs. There are things my children have said and done to me that make me firmly believe that. Maybe after some more w(h)ine I’ll have it in me to put that on my blog.

Thanks for the laughs, Daddy-o. Be well.

  6. Can’t wait to see what you get for Christmas.

I’ve been told that I’m going to get a walker and some Depends.
Little farts think 40 is old.

  7. Wow, I am speechless over that ad!

Seriously, this morning my kid barfed in the drugstore parking lot and I almost relived that moment myself just now. It made me ill. Agree that with a “young adult” it maybe somewhat plausible, but little kids???

And their slogan “Stay in the game”. Argh!

Up next… Botox being pimped by these kids to their mom to make sure she scores a dude because “its time”.

  8. Me Thinks – oh my god, I am STILL LAUGHING! Thank you!! I needed that today. Kids pimping Botox. That’s the funniest comment I’ve read in ages. I’m telling you – me thinks you need a blog.

  9. Your blog title got me. Just for men? Of course I clicked right away.

    Agreed: your daughter rocks!!

  10. Ok, I was kidding about the laid part, but some little kids do want their parents to have love and are very romantic.

My 6 year old daughter would be the first to do what was done in that commercial. I AM NOT KIDDING.

I saw her writing a love letter one time and I said, who’s that for, she said Maxwell. I said, I thought Maxwell had a girlfriend already (these are kindergartners mind you)she said, he does. I’m writing this letter for him to give to her.

She’s always picking flowers and telling pjdaddy to give them to me and pretend that it was his idea.

  11. Wow PJmomma, wish my DD was thoughtful like that! I only get letters when she’s in trouble.

I’d like to be the first to ask where they managed to get Just for Men without their father knowing. Did they have a heart to heart w/ Mom/ex-wife asking her to please oh please get daddy a box of Just for Men so he can move on and get back in the dating game? Or maybe it was mom’s suggestion so he’d leave her alone and get over it.

  12. OK, that was seriously the most horrible commercial I’ve ever seen. I can’t believe someone pitched that, and the client bought it.

It’s almost as bad as Tab’s “Mindsticker”. It almost has the same soundtrack.

  13. Your daughter has good advice for you. But can she recommend any good product for the gray hairs?
