Bekah - I agree, if your son's not aware of the "adult" Miley, no harm, no foul. I doubt kids his age are talking about it at school.

My teen daughter, on the other hand, talked extensively with classmates about Jamie Lynn-Spears (Zoey 101) getting pregnant (they all prefer to wait on becoming moms), and a bit about Miley and her Vanity Fair pic (basically that Miley is trying to break out into adult roles, and that's why she did it. Sad they feel she needs sex to get there)

Anna - I'm totally with you on wanting to see younger people do well. I remember in Euro2008 watching Fernando Torres score Spain's goal in the finals, and feeling really really happy for him. He'd worked so hard in the tournament and in that game for that moment to manifest.

I'd love for Miley to succeed. I hate that she feels she has to turn slutty/sexy to do it. It's just music and entertainment. But that's the nature of the business, I suppose.

I do feel somewhat bad for all of these superstar kids. They have no choice but to grow up in front of millions of people, and while technically, they *don't have to* grow up where the rest of the world can watch, at 15, you really can't be expected to make decision of whether or not you should quit the business because you "want to grow up like a normal kid" without your head exploding, and especially not when a bunch of adults are probably telling you to keep doing what you're doing.

I hope, just like you, that Miley doesn't crash and burn down the line. I'm at that age (30, actually) where I like seeing kids and other people finding success and happiness through hard decent work and doing what they like to do. I hope she'll always love what she's doing, and that she doesn't feel she ever has to be someone (or something) else through sheer pressure and fame.

And, wow... that Video Phil posted a link to was hilarious.

And I didn't mean to sound like I am ignoring the matter at hand with my son....when he has questions I'll answer them, but he doesn't watch the news, doesn't read MSN.com.. none of that, so for now he'll stay in lala land.

My son is only nine. He loves Miley Cyrus, her show, her music, all of it. He'd NEVER admit it to his friends, but he does. He has no idea of all of her satin sheet pics or licorice swapping shenanigans. I'm just going to let him continue to beleive she is two people... Hannah and Miley. He's only nine, no need to bog him down with reality.

Single Mom Seeking - don't feel bad about buying your daughter that stuff! Clearly, she wanted it. And that's part of my point with this post.

I think Disney's problem is that their other characters never age due to the simple fact they are cartoons or computer animated. Maybe Disney simply doesn't know how to deal with ageing (going through teen year) divas!

Kat - I had problems with the Vanity Fair pics, not because they look "trampy", but because they look like she just had sex and she's only 15. If a boyfriend took them after sneaking over to her house, that's one thing (and common enough among our nation's youth). But for a pro photographer to take them with her parents' consent (they claim they weren't in the room - and why weren't they? ) means it's a calculated move toward womanhood. Fine. Just don't keep peddling kiddy merchandise! Eight year olds look up to you!

Honey - Lolita. Nice reference. Does that make me Humbert Humbert? Haha.

Tent Camper - I'm with you, here. F! Disney. I actually like some of their cartoon stuff, but their sales and marketing is all about making the big money. (I've had friends visit inside Disney imagineering, so I actually can say that knowing I'm speaking some truth)

It's all very Lolita, and I agree, you have to wonder--is she putting it out there with that intention, or are we reading into it what we want? And to what degree?
