DNC: Clinton Shines a Light (and gets funky)
Amidst the hoopla of the Democratic National Convention’s history-making nomination of Barack Obama as the first African-American presidential candidate on a major party ticket, several Clintons made their voices heard.
There was a wonkish and funny Bill (who I shook hands with in 1992) heartily endorsing Obama.
There was a supportive and moving Chelsea (who I spied in a Palo Alto bar when she was at Stanford in 2001) introducing her mother.
There was a self-congratulatory Hillary (who I have never met) throwing her support to Obama.
Sadly, there was no George (who I saw in concert circa 1988) with his big-ass flashlight shining a funk-a-deli-cocity, let alone funk-a-licious-ness, on the proceedings. And that, gentle reader, is a crying shame.
I give you George Clinton, interplanetary funkologist.
If this doesn’t brighten your day, I don’t know what will. Watch. Enjoy. Comment. Peace out.

OMG – I think between the man wearing the diaper/thigh-hi boot combo and the guy’s bobbing nose, my head just exploded. THAT’S what the DNC needed this year. Thanks for the wake up this morning.

If only the Dems were such fun…
I saw George Clinton and the P-Funk Allstars circa 1992 and it was the single most fun show I’ve ever seen. At any given time there are upwards of 15 people wandering on, off, around the stage. It is one huge party and despite the venue not being conducive to dancing (all seats!) everyone was on their feet.
I seem to remember when Clinton first ran (or maybe it was his 2nd term) that George Clinton ran a “campaign” also? It was hysterical.
Thank you for making my morning bright!

Single Mom in NE – can you imagine this at the DNC?
T – funk-a-hell-a right!
Me Thinks – you know how at a rock show as soon as it starts, people around you toke up? Well at the George Clinton show, I swear as soon as it started they lit a bushel of pot on stage and turned on huge fanst to blow the smoke out into the audience. It was a wild crazy show – same thing with musicians walking on and off stage. It was mind blowing. Great music too.
The Exception – no pic! Here’s the scene: Clinton and Gore spoke at the company where I worked. Only a select few employees were invited in to hear him (not me). A bunch of us stood outside in the rain waiting to shake his hand. Clinton and Gore come out and start shaking hands, and right before they get to me I get patted down by the Secret Service from behind (they were patting everyone down, it was weird). I shook Clinton and Gore’s hand in a flash, no time to pose, and they were gone.
Of note: my daughter was just born and I was sporting a (new dad with no time to sleep, let alone shave) beard at the time.

George Clinton is seriously the coolest.
There was a supportive and moving Chelsea (who I spied in a Palo Alto bar when she was at Stanford in 2001) introducing her mother.
Has the restraining order been lifted yet?

You know how I knew for sure it was Chelsea in the bar? There were these mid-20s looking, clean cut, super fit guys dressed in brand new clothes that were meant to make them look like college students (except no college students dress like catalog models), standing with their backs to the wall, not drinking, surveying the room, keeping an eye on a blonde hottie at the bar (Chelsea).
Secret service, baby.
And PJ Momma, I didn’t need to issue a restraining order against her, but thanks for asking.

How funny–those secret service guards were ridiculously easy to spot. I had forgotten all about that. I was a graduate teaching assistant for one of Chelsea’s classes and those guys were there, and also she and I were both taken as dates to a medical school dinner function once and there they were again.
I felt bad for Chelsea when she was a college student–it is a hard time of life to have everyone scrutinizing your every move. Stanford’s a tough environment. She seems strong and graceful and so grown up now–it is nice to see!
