Halloween Holiday Decorating Gene
It’s almost Halloween, and my house should be all spookified for this autumn holiday, right?
Grab your broom and witch’s hat and fly on over to the Silicon Valley Moms Blog where Dad’s House has gone all Haunted House for Halloween.
Or has it? My house is frighteningly normal looking these days, as it is for most holidays… Is it just me? Is it a Mars/Venus thing?
Leave a creepy comment, a scary scream, a horrific howl, or just say Boo!

You better! Or Mary Dead will hunt you down and pluck your eyeballs out, or eat your first-born child, or send you a black cat that needs an exorcism, or something totally sick…

Today’s post got to me….
I separated just two days before Christmas ~ a year later it was just my daughter & I & our “Charlie Brown” tree ~ cause that’s what I was feeling. I decorated much more when my daughter was little. I have all my goodies for each of the holidays stored away; maybe she will want them when she settles.
I have, for the first time, created a dia de los muertos alter to honor my loved ones that have passed. Pictures, flowers, candles, the 4 elements represented ~ Water, Earth, Wind and Fire ~ I’m enjoying this creative and meaningful project.
Today is going to be a beautiful, warm Fall day ~ my favorite time of year.

Funny, but true! Do men think it’s “fey” to decorate for the holidays or something?
I decorate, but most of the decorations are either made or chosen at the store by my kids. It’s really their decorations.
And I can relate to loriann about just not wanting to decorate after a split. At first, I didn’t want to decorate even for Christmas, but basically my kids really wanted it, so I helped them put things up. It was weird because the things kept me remembering my ex–his favorite ornament, how we bought that together after we were first married, etc.
The next year, I took the kids to Target and let them pick out lots of new decorations, then we went home and put them all up. We also took out some of the old decorations, but I went through and edited them and got rid of/gave away a lot. Did more of the same the next year. Now most of the decorations remind me of happier times, and I enjoy putting them up and seeing them. Took some time, though.

Here’s a juvenile Halloween joke.
Why don’t ghosts have children?
Because they have Hollow-Weenies!
Yeah… I went there.

WMT, that was actually funny.
My kids live for Halloween. All year, every year, stories of vampires and ghosts can be the fodder for great kitchen table conversations.
I keep my holiday decorating simple, but both the kids are into it. I have round tops on my stair rails leading up to my front door that I cover with old t-shirts…voila, ghosts. Martha Stewart would be so proud.
However, He has never been interested in decorating. My father very much was. He always likes what I do…but unlike how it was a two-person job of working together between my parents (especially with the outdoor decor), it just is another way that I think of and do everything.
A hypothesis was once proposed that perhaps that way, he gets out of having to do any work in the first place. I would not doubt that.
Depends on the person, I say. Perhaps more of a gender tendency, but there are always the exceptions.
Be well, Dads.

Halloween is pretty simple in my apartment. I have a set of eyeball lights and a light up ghost. When the grocery store puts the mini pumpkins and dried corn on sale I pick up a few of those to carry the decor through Thanksgiving. The only holiday I really go all out for is Christmas and like loriann and MC that was tough the first year. Lots of eggnog but that’s another post altogether.
The other holidays throughout the year just don’t do anything for me in terms of “holiday spirit” and decorations.

Okay, broken bones (even kids’ arms from sports accidents) don’t phase me, but your pumpkin pic…ewww. I deeply admire the holiday spirit of the person that came up with that idea, however! Very creative.
