Favorite Pumpkin Pie Recipes

Favorite pumpkin pie recipes A single mom friend of mine said her favorite Thanksgiving memory from childhood was making pumpkin pie each year with her grandma. Her family would drive to her grandmother’s house in the country where they’d spend Thanksgiving morning cooking together in the kitchen. Fragrant smells of ginger and clove from the oven, and fresh mint from grandpa’s pre-dinner mojito (sorry, I embellished that last part. Thinking about my own family!)

You might think her delicious childhood memories were attached to a pumpkin pie recipe known only to her grandma. You’d be wrong.

Grandma’s recipe came from the back of a Libby’s pumpkin can.

My brothers and I have similar happy memories of Thanksgiving meals. Visiting maternal or paternal grandparents, with turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy filling our plates. We always had three pies at dessert: apple (a la mode), mince meat (yuck), and pumpkin pie. My mom is the queen of excellent pumpkin pies.

Mom’s secret recipe? She follows the recipe on the Libby’s pumpkin label!

I’m convinced. Two out of two fond memories point to pumpkin pie recipes on the back of the Libby’s can.

Pumpkin Pie Recipe

2 eggs
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground ginger
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 12 oz. can evaporated milk
1 unbaked pie shell (9 in.)
1 16 oz can Libby’s pumpkin

Preheat oven to 425. Combine sugar and spices in a small bowl. Beat eggs in a large bowl. Mix pumpkin and sugar/spice in with the eggs. Slowly stir in the evaporated milk. Pour into the pie shell.

Bake at 425 for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 and bake 45 more. A knife stuck into the pie will come out clean when it’s done.

Slice me a big piece. I’m hungry.

  1. Funny you’d post this. I have a friend who is an amazing baker (you know the one – always invited to the party because she never leaves her house without a dessert) and she grew up always making pumpkin pie from scratch. And one year in a pinch she used Libby’s and hasn’t boiled a pumpkin since. Needless to say, this is the ONLY way a pumpkin pie will ever be baked at my house…

And no, I’m not a Libby’s rep. Just a lazy individual who loves herself some pie…

  4. Well…(he admitted sheepishly)..even though I bought a pumpkin pie at Marie Callender’s last night, I do have to admit the homemade is always a hit. Come to think of it, the pie I purchased didn’t exactly thrill my taste buds. I’ll give this a try this weekend. Thanks, D!

  5. Printing this out — although tell me if I’m crossing a line here: I’m using the Organic canned pumpkin from Whole Foods… is that okay Dad’s House?

    Thanks!!

  6. My mom made pumpkin pie using real pumpkin one year. The only problem is we didn’t carve pumpkins that year so we all knew it was frozen pumpkin from the previous year. It was kind of stringy and after that we insisted on the canned stuff. McCormick even makes a pumpkin pie spice blend so you don’t have to spend $20 buying each individual spice in the recipe.

Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream from a can, or cool whip?

  9. Happy Thanksgiving!

The Libby’s pumpkin pies have been a tradition in my family since my childhood. I’ve always made 3 at Thanksgiving and Christmas, since the family loved them so much.
Imagine my surprise though when last year my 22 yr old made pumpkin pies with a DIFFERENT recipe!! I didn’t say anything about it…but I could NOT understand how she loved my pies and chose a different recipe than Libby’s. So odd!!
    Happy eating!

  10. Sorry, DH – but you know how I am – nothing beats scratch – ever! Now I have no idea how I’d feel if I actually had an option of canned, but I just I’ll find out when I get back, eh?

  11. as much as I love to cook i’m way to lazy to make a pie. I just buy the frozen ones :)

  12. I made two Libby pies and they both turned out pretty well. I say pretty because I made the crust from scratch. Was a little thick but I’ll know for next time! I just couldn’t bring myself to make the filling and buy the shell. That’s cheating. Either buy the whole thing or make it!

  13. We’ve always done the recipe on the back of the Libby’s pumpkin can as well.

I do have to admit though – the first year I was married I volunteered to bring the pies. I never paid attention to how my mom did it – but she told me to just get the Libby’s can. Well – it turns out that there are TWO different kinds of cans. There is one big can that is a pumpkin pie mix and all you have to do is basically pour it into the shell. I picked up this can and thought “Man this is gonna be easy!” But as cheap as I am – I realized that the smaller cans were on sale – so I just grabbed two of those. BUT those are pumpkin only – and you have to follow the recipe on the back. So I smoothed those two cans of straight pumpkin into the pie shells and couldn’t figure out why no one would eat the pies – until I explained how I made them.

A mistake I have not repeated.

  14. There is nothing like flirting during the holidays. It seems as if everyone is in a great mood and, well, it is just easy to do without it going anywhere – which might make it all the more fun and easy.

I am definitely doing my fair share of flirting!
