Miley Cyrus Nude Photos Not a Mistake

Miley Cyrus Hannah MontanaNews flash from Scotland – Miley Cyrus changed her mind about those nude Vanity Fair photos taken by acclaimed photographer Annie Leibovitz. Rather than saying it was a mistake for a fifteen year-old to be shot naked in satin sheets with a just had sex sort of look about her, she now says: “Everyone outside of America liked it a little bit more because that’s more like the style, but the States are really conservative.”

Funny. Miley doesn’t seem to mind that the conservative United States helped make her Hannah Montana franchise worth more than one billion dollars. I can’t imagine Miley would have made that much money by simply flashing skin for the camera, without her good girl TV image behind her.

I understand that the US is more conservative that some parts of Europe. Check any Italian or French topless beach to verify that.

Funny story – last time I was in Italy, my kids and their preteen cousins and I walked down the beach to get gelato. On the way back, we came across two women in their early 20s sunbathing topless. When they heard us approach, they quickly covered up. But when they saw I was “just a dad” (they said as much in Italian, of which io parlo un po), and not some pervy younger guy, they uncovered and went back to topless sunbathing. (Did I mention that being a dad friggin’ rocks?)

Why do I care about Miley Cyrus and her nude photo shoot? Only because she’s younger than my daughter. Once these girls are eighteen, they are adults and can do whatever they want. Even at nearly-seventeen, my daughter is showing maturity she didn’t possess a year before. But those Miley Cyrus pics were taken when the singer/actress was only fifteen!

I don’t care if the world thinks America is conservative or not. Fifteen is too young for photos like that. Especially when there’s a billion dollars being made off her good girl image.

  1. I agree. 15 is too young. We need to let kids just be kids.

  2. Miley will spend many years to come being pushed and pulled by the societal sways. It is exponentially tougher on her than it is on say… your daughter. I think she’ll pull through okay. I see a lot of strength of character in her.

  3. I like your side note about Italy. Too funny!

You’re right. The photos wouldn’t be a big deal if she didn’t have Disney tattooed on her forehead.

  4. I completely agree 15 is too young. My oldest daughter is 17 and I would kill her if she had photos taken, let alone published like that.

BTW, men that can speak Italian ROCK, even better when it’s a dad!

  5. Yes, 15 is too young & the pictures are sexually exploitive media-savvy come-ons. Seems obvious.

But I’m really getting sick of all the super-young teen starlets and “singers” being sold out there.

It’s not like they have any particularly stunning acting or singing talents that single them out for all the media attention and exposure. The media push of these girls seems to be solely based on exploiting their looks/youth in a barely legal way.

Happily, my daughter’s always been more obsessed with Ella Fitzgerald and Bob Marley than Miley, anyway. And Beyonce (cringe!).

  6. Dads–how’s the “flirt a day” going?

  7. In principal, I agree with you, 15 is too young to be taking sexy pictures, but you can’t deny it was a shrewd business decision. The controversy it created had to be good for business. I think the consumers who buy/view that schlock are as much at fault.

  8. I agree with you that 15 year old girls do not need to be in such pictures, but I often wonder if Europe has a more healthy view of the human body and sex than do we?

  10. I’ve got three teenage daughters the youngest is 16, the oldest is 20. There is no way in hell I’d put up with that. Publicity can be had in more tasteful ways than stripping…

  11. I have to agree. I hate shopping for clothes for my 7 year old daughter. The skirts are insanely short. She’s a child, why does she need to show skin? She’s already started asking for a bikini for the pool and she wants to wear makeup because “mommy lets her”. What’s wrong with just being a kid? I also agree that when she is older she can make her own decisions whether I agree or not.

  12. Not so sure it has a great deal to do with Americans being more conservative than Europeans…even if we are. I think it has more to do with a child in an adult environment….the entertainment industry. The only child star I can think of off the top of my head who remains relatively well adjusted is Ron Howard (although apparently his history tutor sucked)

yes…other cultures have a more open attitude toward partial or full nudity…then again in still other cultures women have to be fully covered head to toe….

I spent about 17 years (and my daughter’s first 13 years) in southern California surrounded by the entertainment industry…my work…our neighborhood…her school friends.

There is almost no way a child can work in that environment…let alone be as successful as Miley is…and not be exposed to an older ADULT lifestyle on a daily basis. Maturity in many aspects comes a lot sooner for those kids.

Although her fanbase is her age and younger… Miley was not the typical 15 or 16 or 17 year old. You can not expect her to be. There is no way she will be a typical adult. Her posing for those photos probably did not seem that out of line to her.

    She is Miley….not Hannah…

I seem to remember there was the same kind of reaction when Annette of Mouseketeer fame started acting in the beach movies in a bikini….

  13. Mad Cartoonist – I put some updates to my “flirt a day” challenge in the original post: Tis the Season to Flirt. I’ll probably do a recap post soon, rather than give daily updates.

As of today, I’m three for three – three flirts, but with three women who weren’t single. Where are the single women hiding!?

  14. Oh I am totally sucking at my flirt a day *sigh* Really I think my boss reads your blog and has swamped me with so much work I dont have time to notice if Brad Pitt stood naked in front of me!

I didnt think the Miley pics were that bad? Would I encourage my daughter to do it if she was famous – probably not! If she was adamant about it – would I support her – probably yes!

Yes 15 is too young for a normal child – like mine and yours. Miley is not normal though and there in lies the problem!

    That’s all I have to say…for now.

  16. I agree with you Dad. Off topic, but I was watching a Levi’s commercial the other day that disgusted me. Two young people, who seem to be total strangers, removing their clothing and then duck into a strangers apartment to have sex. Totally disgusted. Did you see it?
