Irish Coffee Recipe, Buena Vista Cafe
The best Irish Coffee in the world is served at San Francisco’s Buena Vista Café. Located opposite the end-of-the-line cable car stop at Fisherman’s Wharf, the saloon has been there for ages. White-jacketed bar tenders line up dozens of glasses at a time. They pour coffee, stir sugar, and pour whiskey right down the row, recklessly dumping ingredients without measuring. The drink is topped with whipped cream.
Given that technique, how the heck does the Buena Vista make such good tasting drinks? Who cares! If you’re in San Francisco, you have to try one.
With winter upon us, I thought it a great time to bust out the basic recipe.
Irish Coffee:
2 tsp sugar
1 part Irish whiskey
2 parts hot coffee
Lightly whipped cream
Heat your mugs or glasses by rinsing them with hot water. Pour the coffee in, stir in two sugar cubes until they dissolve, then add the whiskey. Float the cream on top by pouring it over the back of a spoon.
Here’s the official version of the Buena Vista Cafe’s Irish Coffee recipe.
Drink it while it’s hot!

What happens to the cream though? Do you stir it in? Or leave it on top – to hit your nose?

Don’t stir the cream in, leave it floating on top.
As for Bay Area winters… I spent a few years in New England, so I know cold. Compared to that, the weather here is roasting. (It’s in the 40s right now, which is cold to me)

My brother-in-law took me to the Buena Vista last year when we visited on spring break and we enjoyed a few! It was definitely the best Irish coffee I have ever had, very smooth! The bartender was a man of few words, but he sure knew what he was doing. I’ve told several friends to make a point and stop there when they go to San Fran. Cheers!
