Prank Phone Call
My kids and I were sitting at the dinner table eating pizza after a night of ice skating with friends when my daughter’s cell phone rang. She has one of those free ringtones that can’t be missed (go on, hit play. You know you want to hear it):
For the record, I have a no cell phones at the dinner table policy, just like their schools have a no cell phones in the classroom policy. I asked her to silence the phone or remove it from the table.
“Don’t worry,” she said. “I was actually expecting that call. No one else will be calling.”
Hmmm. Not good enough for me. She relented and put the cell phone on the living room book case.
We weren’t one bite of pizza further into the meal when her cell phone ringtone starts blaring again.
“Dammit,” I said. “Turn your phone off.”
No sooner had I said that, the phone went silent.
My son had an evil grin.
My daughter went over to her phone and picked it up. Just as she was about to silence it, the ringtone started up again (making me wonder whether free ringtones are really free – or are we paying for them in hidden ways, like dinner interruptus?)
She looked at caller ID, and called out her brother’s name in annoyance.
My son’s evil grin turned into a giggle.
Apparently, speed dialing a cell phone and playing one of its ringtones is the new way for a brother to torment his sister.
Long live prank phone calls. And the sibling love that inspires them.

Nice trick!! I think I’ve done that one before to my brothers, but for a different reason. He used to have one of those awful ring tones that had Ludacris on it = “Eh, muthaf*a, this be Ludacris, pick up the phone”. My cousin thought it always was someone coming through the walkie talkie function, and would get increasingly annoyed, as he thought my brother’s friends were particularly rude. It took him aaages to figure out that it was just the ring tone, while we were bursting in peals of laughter.

Phones now have songs instead of ringing when you call.
The first time I heard my daughter’s, I thought she had picked up and the radio was too loud and she couldn’t hear me.
So I hung up.
Well, you live and learn.

Too Funny!
Young Prince (4 years) heard the song (cool song, too…I agree with Lance) and calls it “The Giraffe Song”…apparently he hears, “Giraffe is in the air…”
Ah, the innocence of youth. That is what got ME giggling!
Thanks for the funny, Dads. Be well.

The song and especially video strike me as a parody of Ibiza in the late 90s. Is your daughter being ironic?

Ha!! That’s good stuff. Sounds like something my kids would do to each other one day… when they get cell phones….
Which could be sooner than I’d like!
Happy Christmas DH.

I realized pretty quickly I had to be careful which song I pick for my ringtone as you never know when it might go off and I don’t want anything I wouldn’t want my kids to repeat.
I used to have a few different rap songs that I had to change for that reason and I had Toby Keith’s “How Do You Like Me Now” and Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” for my ex for a while but then everytime that ring came on someone at work would yell “what does she want now?” so now everyone has the same tone.

Sounds like something I would have done to my older sister back in the day when cell phones were only in James Bond films. In later years your kids will recall these times as -dare I say- the good old days? It happens all the time for my sister and I. Now days when i get the urge to torment her (no, it doesn’t go away), I remind her to ask for the ’senior discount.’ Some things never change. ;)
