How is Facebook Used by Single Parents?

Single Parents Connection Facebook GroupHow is Facebook used by single parents? Like anything on Facebook, the answer will vary depending on the person. But ask any blogging single parent, and they just might start their answer by pointing you to the Single Parents Connection Group.

The Single Parents Connection Facebook group is free to join, boasts an outstanding blogroll of single parent bloggers, has a discussion board and wall where people can ask questions and shout-out events. (There are currently some single parent reality TV show casting calls listed there. Now there’s an example of Facebook used by the single parent community!)

Of course, the Single Parents Connection group members have access to all of Facebook’s other features – applications, games, personal pages, other groups. I admit I’ve been flirted with and hit on more than a few times there. (Hamburger meat recipes or steak? I’m not telling.)

Why was the group created? Rather than re-invent the wheel and build a self-contained community from scratch, the Single Parents Connection group leverages the popularity of Facebook and is used as a central meeting place for single parent bloggers and their readers. The group generates no revenue, so its creators don’t profit when members visit or comment there.

If you’ve already joined, good going! The Single Parents Connection group recently topped 500 members, and its blogroll lists close to 50 blogs. If you’d like to join the group, just visit the Facebook group page and click Join This Group in the right sidebar.

All single parent bloggers are encouraged to display a blog badge for the group! If you’re a single dad blogger or single mom blogger, and you’re displaying cool looking blog badges from other individual blogs, keep in mind you’re basically giving those individuals free advertisement and publicity. (Cool if they’re close friends, but otherwise why do it?) Not to mention, you’re probably leaking your google page rank away, meaning that other blogger will show up in search results rather than you! Why not give that publicity in a not-for-profit way to the community at large, instead? And do it in a way that doesn’t leak page rank? Go here for a Facebook single parents blog badge that doesn’t leak page rank.

Finally, if your single parent blog isn’t yet listed on the Facebook group page, just ask! You can email singleparentsconnection[at]gmail[dot]com. Or leave a note in the comment section here.

Invite your friends and blog readers to join!

Single Parents Connection – it’s how Facebook gets used.

  1. Great plug for the group, Dads. I mentioned this to a friend from high school (through FB, also in CA) and she joined up as well.

Thanks for all the organizational effort.

    Be well, Dads.

  5. I am so ignorant in the ways of blog promotion, page rank, etc. I had no idea about this whole page rank leak thing. Anyway thanks for inviting me to join that network – it’s great to be a part of such an awesome community :)

  6. Leah – yeah, I think most bloggers don’t know that blog badges can hurt your blog when they leak pagerank. It certainly helps the bloggers whose blogs you point to!

C – you’ve been added! Thanks for joining in.

  7. I just have to say thank you to you and Rachel for organizing the group! I don’t remember how I first stumbled onto it but as I started reading the blogs listed there, it was the first time since my separation that I didn’t feel totally alone and crazy. It really was the start of a turnaround in my life. I’m completely addicted to single parent blogs now and have made some great friends through the group (and even caught up with a long lost friend I hadn’t talked to in 10 years…never thought we’d both wind up as single mommies!) I also started my own blog which has been cathartic for me and hopefully helpful to others as well. I don’t think my blog is listed on the site, could you double check for me? I keep meaning to ask one of you to add me but I never think about when I’m in a place where I can do it. I’ll get the blog badge posted ASAP too…I’ve plugged the group a few times but didn’t know how to get a badge.

Thanks again for all you and Rachel have done for all of us. I might have to get into that FB flirting thing…

Thanks for the Christmas greetings, btw…. Hope yours was wonderful!

  11. I’m not a single parent, but I am a blogger. I didn’t realize the badges will do that to your google rank. I am too lazy to put those up when people give them to me anyway, but that is good to know.

  12. Thanks for such great and useful information. I have had a link to your blog on mine for awhile and just came and took a peek. I have recently learned how to use Facebook after being there for year and unsure of it all but now it makes sense and I love it. I would love to have my blog on your group there.

  13. LOL, I guess I’d have to care about google rank, and leakage, and all that other stuff related to popularity. (I don’t.)

Anyway, I’ll try this facebook group next time I have time to get on my new facebook. I’m learning facebook, slowly! It SEEMS alright……..
