Twitter is Bad For You

twitter addictionWe all twitter. But did you ever stop and think whether it’s good for you?

Sure, it’s awesome to have a zillion followers. You can twit that you just sneezed, and someone, somwhere will say gesundheit. But twitter takes you away from the present moment, and that’s majorly whack.

Twit on over to the Silicon Valley Moms Blog where I explain why Twitter is Bad For You.

This is a serious post. You seriously should read it. And twit here or there in comment form. Twitter the post URL if you are so moved. Twit karma will be returned to you in spades.

And if you just can’t get enough twittering, feel free to follow dadshouseblog on twitter. I can’t say that I twit all that often, but where else are you going to hear about my line of Dad’s House cologne (DH-1 is barbecue scented), my Dad’s House line of boxer briefs (no tighty whities here), or my shout-outs whenever there’s a live wire going off on some post?

It will be good for you. (fyi – there’s a lively discussion going on at the SV Moms twitter post)

Cheap a little, talk a little, tweet.

  1. You must have meant 10:00 PST?

  2. I will go read the other blog now! But I have found twitter to be a HUGE networking tool for me here in SA!

I agree that having 10000 followers is a little impractical and you loose the effect but chose your followers and followings correctly and its a pretty cool tool :)

  3. “alert, still, completely present, not wanting anything other than that moment as it is – then you make room for Being.”

That line spoke loudly to me. This how I try to live.

    Try being the operative word.

Can I confess something here? Not only have I never twittered, I am also a text virgin.

    Really.

  4. Left my comment over at SVMoms. ( http://snipurl.com/a6h6q ) One other thing about Twitter that bothers me – Following someone who tweet 20 times per hour with a ‘must visit’ link in each. Twitter fatigue!

  5. I love twitter! I have found it very resourceful for what I do…I am the Co-Founder of BabySpot and I have connected with so many moms/business and I have even got some partnerships from it. Yes it takes me away from the moment but its a great to get your brand out there…

  6. DM, your argument is compelling, but I see blogging as having the same failure of not living in the now. When we blog, we’re thinking about how our not-present audience is going to react.

Besides that, it’s just another tool and it depends on how you use it. I don’t tweet on my phone. I do watch my twitter stream for links of interest. I do promote my blog on twitter.

  7. Lance, I sort of see your point, but I disagree. Definitely, if you twitter on your phone in the middle of a real-world event, you are escaping the present moment. I did that during the super bowl – I was busy texting a friend on the east coast when one of the team’s scored a TD, and I missed it.

Blogging – yes, you are thinking about how folks will react. But when you sit down to write a blog post, you are focused and present to the task at hand, namely, blogging.

If you are constantly checking your twitter stream when your attention and focus should be elsewhere, then twitter is taking you away from the present moment.

  8. Couldn’t agree with you more. Twitter is a bunch of twaddle. I’m not buying into it. I don’t care if it has marketing value, I still say it’s trumpery waffle. Tripe. Tosh. Trash. Give me the present moment anytime. It’s no coincidence that where I come from (the UK) a twit is a “foolishly annoying person”. Enough said.

  9. Okay… I just signed on Twitter today.. So, virgin no more.. However, it seems a little, um, unnecessary.. Between blogs and IM’s, I can usually tell those who need to know anything they need to know pretty quickly..
Of course I’m saying this now, having just signed up to follow you, and will probably eat my words soon enough!!!! :)
