Football Playoffs Go Great With Beer
My buddy and I caught the Ravens-Steelers playoff game in a bar. I know, I know, I blogged at New Years that my football flame had died out. But as a single parent with half-time custody, and way too much alone time, I’ve learned to accept every invitation I can that comes my way. So when my buddy suggested beer, pub food, and the game on twenty TVs, I said sure! (so much for flat abs…)
Only problem – he wanted to hit a sports bar frequented by Stanford students and grads.
Ugh. I’m too old for that. We’re both in our forties, so he’s too old for it, too. The difference? I have a daughter who will be going to college in just over a year. I can already picture her hanging out in places like this. (And I don’t want her in a place frequented by middle aged men!)
We wandered around to a few other bars, but the sports bar really was the place to be. So, I sucked it up, and we went on in.
Just as I pictured, young people everywhere. Tons of women, too (a good thing). But as we ordered our beers, I noticed something else. Only half the crowd was too young for me. The rest was right in my league. (Now, now. Dad’s House readers will wonder how many hot bus girls there were. I’m talking about women in their 30s and 40s! And they weren’t even lonely housewives.) Just shows you can’t judge a sports bar by it’s cover.
We elbowed our way onto one of the long tables. A couple of women nearby were very happy to have us join in. With a football vibe, it wasn’t hard to start up conversations. I also exchanged some flirty text messages with some female friends who couldn’t come out. (No discreet affairs going on, they’re just good friends.) One of the texting women was a single mom who had her kid this weekend. The curse of conflicting custody schedules.
To make a long story short – we drank plenty of beer, we ate plenty of sketchy food, we chatted with plenty of nice women, and we had a plenty good time.
When’s that Super Bowl thing?

Go Steelers!———-February 1 in Tampa
A mixed crowd is always fun. Conversation is easy with a championship game the focus, plenty of beer, and the obligatory fried food, what’s not to like?
Just so you know, when your kids go off to college, plenty goes on you don’t like. Plenty goes on that you never find out about and that’s the upside.

That picture of the beer looks good even this early in the morning!
Sounds like a nice time and I’m glad you weren’t a middle-aged loser trolling for college students! My daughter will be going THIS FALL! Yikes!

Mixed crowds are the best. One of my favorite pubs is one that I’ve been going to since I was 18. It’s located close to SMU and there are plenty of people our age there.

Sounds like a great time! I’m sure your flat abs are still looking fabulous and with the cycling and hiking you do, I’ll bet your legs are…..ooh, I better not get thinking about that this morning or my productivity will go right into the wastebasket.
Have a great day! The weather is beautiful way north of you, so I’m thinking it’s probably gorgeous in your area today, too~

I’m all for watching a game at a bar rather than at home. Some friends invited me out to catch a game recently, and I had the same thought about the age of the crowd, too young. We ended up grabbing a table next to a mom out with her college daughter, go figure.

Kudos to you for discovering a new place to have a great time and with a possibility of some prospects or at the least, some healthy flirty. I hope I can find an equivalent here!

I’m a Raiders fan! But yesterday, with so many Steelers fans in the house, I just had to root against them. It’s so much more fun that way. (evil grin)
Go Cardinals in the Super Bowl! Kurt Warner. Larry Fitzgerald. Go AZ!

Just goes to show… hm… what does it show… that we can’t be quick to judge? That we need to be open to the opportunities? That the outside can be deceiving? Things aren’t always as they seem?
Hey, it’s a holiday, I have no idea!

My Poor Ravens, taking a beating by the Stealers the 3rd time this season! But for a rookie quarterback and being hurt up, we didn’t do so bad.
I’m glad you had fun! We just had three other couples over to watch the game. Good times. We will have a huge kick-ass Superbowl party on Feb 1st. Go Arizona!

Boo hiss, D and all you Cardinals fans! Well, we’ll see in 2 weeks. Now, if only the Superbowl could be played in ten degree weather and snow again! That would be fun to watch…from home.
Go Steelers!
