U2 on Letterman 2009

U2 is on Letterman all week, this first week of March 2009, promoting their new album No Line on the Horizon. How cool is that? Here’s a youtube video of U2 performing on Letterman Monday night:

I’ve been a U2 fan for decades – from Boy and War, to Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, to Vertigo and everything else. Some call them the Best Band in the World. And after seeing the U2 Super Bowl 9/11 Tribute U2 Super Bowl 9/11 Tribute, I tend to agree. (If that youtube video doesn’t bring a tear to your eye…)

Here’s more youtube: U2 Beautiful Day on Letterman (from Thursday night)

But as big a U2 fan as I am, I’ve only seen U2 twice in concert. (I’ve seen Pearl Jam five times. Letterman never.)

The first time I saw U2: they came to San Jose, California on the Vertigo tour. A friend of mine is a huge U2 fan, and travels all over to see them. She had one extra ticket, so she convinced three of us to join her at the show.

Yeah, two of us had to scalp tickets.

We show up to see U2 at the Shark Tank (HP Pavilion). There are people everywhere trolling for tickets. I mean, it’s U2! The band doesn’t come to the 408 that often. I figure there’s no way we’ll score tickets.

My buddy says not to worry, and we make our way to the edge of a crowd wanting tickets for the U2 show. In no time flat, some guy asks us if we need two. Heck yeah! We paid some serious money, but whatever – we were going to see U2!

Our friends had seats, and we were on the floor, so we entered through a different door. The ticket taker scanned our tickets through some optical reader, and all of a sudden, her laptop computer starts flashing red. WTF! Phony U2 tickets! We were busted! And out some serious dough.

“You just won,” she said.
“Won what?” we asked.
“You’re in the heart.”

The catwalk that U2’s Bono runs around stretches into the audience and forms the shape of a heart. They randomly select who gets to be inside it. That night, my buddy and I were random.

We watched the U2 show 3 people from the stage. My neck hurt from constantly looking up at Bono! (Haha, just kidding. That’s how I teased my friends who had seats.)

The show was amazing. Something like this (U2 Elevation at Slane Castle on youtube):

If you can ever see U2 in concert – go! It’s totally worth it. Whether they’re on Letterman or not.

Oh, our second U2 show? In Honolulu, with Pearl Jam opening.

Top that, David Letterman.

  1. That’s awesome! I’m a big fan. I’ve gone to their concert every time they tour. Even though it’s been a while, I’ve loved their music from the first time I heard them. They are one of my favorite bands. And you’re right.. it’s worth paying the inflated price for tickets.

  2. U2 in Honolulu with Pearl Jam! That must’ve been fantastic! I’ve been lucky enough to see U2 here in Denver a few years ago, actually I think it been more than a few. I was not in the heart – we had seats – but it was a terrific concert.

  3. I’ve been a U2 fan for as long as I can remember and have never, seen them in concert. Its awful… depressing… I must see them this next time around.

I’m so jealous of your story of seeing them so close! I would LOVE that!!!

That’s a show to see before I die, right? U2….

  5. You’re in my heart, QTMama! (smile)

If anyone can’t catch them in concert, the Slane Castle DVD (titled “Go Home”) is well worth it. We play it all the time in my house, whether we watch or just listen to the music.

  6. Yeah, I never really got into U2. But I did watch them on Monday night!

  7. U2 in Honolulu with Pearl Jam opening must have been orgasmic! Well, I dig Bono so it would have been for me. I’m hoping U2 comes to Raleigh. I’m ready to rock out like my 20 year old self when I last saw them at RFK Stadium.

  8. Woooooo, the heart! Lucky you. I’ve only seen U2 once, in Seattle. We didn’t have great tickets, but it was a gorgeous night on the waterfront and so memorable. Their CDs are my favorite road trip music, but I have to put the cruise control on or I’m speeding before I know it.

I took a friend’s teen daughter and several of her girlfriends to Pearl Jam on Maui years ago. They ditched me half way through, but I kept them in sight from the stands to live up to my chaperone duties. They had strict rules from this Auntie, but we all had a great time.

  9. Sounds awesome. They’re a great band. Totally jealous!

  11. I didn’t really have a true appreciation for U2 until the late 90’s. I mean, I always enjoyed their music, but there was something about them that just didn’t resonate with me until I got a little older.

I totally believe they are one of the few bands who have totally gotten better with age.

  12. I heart U2. I missed Monday’s Letterman….due to some of that single parenting craziness…but caught the YouTube clips.

I suck at Guitar Hero too….laughing…

The tour is gonna be announced next week…I think…and rumor has it they are trying to keep tickets prices lower…wonder if they are coming back to the Tank?

seriously….I truly respect Paul Hewson…both personally and professionally…

  13. U2 has a special place in my heart. My first HS boyfriend, who passed away a few years ago, was obsessed with them. We saw them live in Seattle in 1997 ir 1998. “One” was always kind of our song.

I can’t believe you scalped tickets and then won the special seats! That’s an awesome story! I will try to catch them this week on Letterman. I have to admit I’m not as big of a fan of their newer stuff.

  14. I couldn’t remember if Paul Hewson is Bono or The Edge (silly me, the Edge’s real name is David!) If you’ve never seen Bono in a necktie, now’s your chance: http://www.paulhewson.com/index2.htm

  15. a necktie and an earring…be still my heart.

I love the quote page….I just might have to use some of them…thanks D.

  16. LOVE LOVE LOVE U2!

I’ve seen them in concert 4 times…. never been “random” and selected to score the heart though! Sweet!

They are my favorite band. Now that I think of it, I’ve got to get Elaine to score some tix next time they are in concert…… no way we’ll get shhhhushed or asked to sit down at THEIR concert!
