Gin and Tonic Recipe

gin and tonic Gary shielded himself with the door of the liquor cabinet while he poured four ounces of gin onto ice…. Still shielded by the cabinet door, Gary took a hefty warmish gulp. Then, closing the cabinet, he held up the glass in case anyone cared to see what a relatively modest drink he’d poured himself.

Record-setting heat in the Bay Area has me contemplating summer cocktails. Er… has me drinking summer cocktails. And what would summer be without the gin and tonic?

A gin and tonic is a refreshing nod to a lazy summer day. And in some households (fictional, or otherwise), a gin and tonic can be a balm to ease the stresses of a feisty family, or a too long and hot day. (Please drink in moderation.)

Many gin and tonic drinkers love Bombay Sapphire gin, and Tanqueray and tonic is a popular choice in bars. But for my money, Plymouth Gin can’t be beat.

Gin and Tonic Recipe

Fill a highball glass with ice
Add 2 oz of gin
Fill to top with tonic water (4 oz.)
Stir
Squeeze a wedge of lime into the glass, then drop the lime wedge in

Dad’s House tip: don’t buy a big bottle of tonic water; it will lose its fizz over time. Instead, buy a 6-pack of mini bottles. One tonic bottle is enough to keep even Gary mind-numbingly happy for an evening.

  1. Blimey, that’s an expansive ingredients list, do you have a vodka and coke one?

  2. Tanq and Tonic was my drink in school. Sapphire is yummy too…I have a bottle here someone brought for my birthday.

Its been closing in on 100 here two days in a row. Almost unheard of for us at any time of the year.

  3. I’m a vodka/soda with lime girl. Whenever a bartender messes up and I get gin instead I send it back. Gin is defintely not my thing.

  4. One of my favorite alcoholic drinks is the gin and tonic, of course with lime. I love lime. I’m not so fond of the Bombay sapphire. I’ll try out the plymouth.

    Cheers:)

  5. Totally weird! Last night, I was having a hankering for a gin and tonic. We went to the ABC store and picked up a bottle of New Amsterdam Gin (I’ve never tried it before). I picked up the little six pack of tonic and some limes and voila! Had me a nice drink when I got home!

ANEEEWWWAAAYY ~ I looked up this cool recipe at the New Amsterdam Gin site:

Serve this modern take on the old honeysuckle martini, either over ice or in a classic martini glass.
    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

2 1/2 oz New Amsterdam Gin
    1/2 oz fresh lime juice
    3/4 oz honey
    1 lime wedge

Combine New Amsterdam Gin, fresh lime juice and honey in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for about six seconds. Strain contents into a classic martini glass or a highball. Garnish with a lime wedge.

  6. Yep – the tip about the smaller tonic water bottles is a big one. The fresher the tonic, the better the drink. I also like making vodka tonics and using lime if we’re having a Mexican style dinner.

  7. Umm, seriously, you read my mind. I bought Gin at the store today (vodka tonics are getting boring). I truly am being serious. I actually searched dadshouse for a gin and tonic recipe but didn’t find anything. Now I know why – you hadn’t posted it yet!

I know what I’m making in a few minutes, after all it is 8:30 at night.
BTW, I used your word on my blog today. Come see which one.

  8. Although Gin is not my beverage of choice… you sure do make it sound tasty after my afternoon working in the yard.

  9. Uhhh, that’s a recipe for a hangover for this gal. Gin gets me every time, even if I only have one and sip it slowly. It does sound refreshing, though. Maybe I’ll have an ale with a twist instead. Mmmm.

  10. Never liked the taste of Gin, however I am sure this is good. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Oh, I loved The Corrections so much! I often think of this passage, both for it’s accuracy in describing his relationship to alcohol and also for the snapshot of him trying to function in a house with a dark emotional fog rolling through it. What laughable, painful, side splitting, heart splitting brilliance.

  12. I am a little sheltered I must admit! and have never had a gin and tonic..I will try one now! I just discovered ’sweet’ martinis..candy apple being my favorite!!:)..might be time to venture outside the box a little, huh??

  13. OK, since you’re dealing with extreme heat I’ll forgive you….but come on – scotch whisky, single malt, neat. In a glencairn glass. Classic.

  14. Well the temperature is on the rise on the East Coast, a gin and tonic could be in order for the weekend. Cheers!

  15. Never had Plymouth Gin. My fave is Hendricks. And I haven’t made it through the Corrections. Must try again.
