Quaker Oatmeal is Good for You and Easy to Make

Hot Quaker oatmeal spooned by cute womanWhat do you eat for breakfast? A piece of toast? A bowl of Wheaties? A muffin from some coffee place? I have a suggestion – start eating Quaker Oatmeal every morning for breakfast. It will do wonders for your body and your day.

(To get straight to the recipe, scroll down)

No, I wasn’t asked by Quaker Oatmeal or anyone else to write this post. I simply like helping people eat right.

Here’s the thing – before my Quaker Oatmeal eating spree, I used to down a bowl of cold cereal for breakfast every day. By midmorning, I’d be hungry again. I’d do a lunchtime workout – a 10-mile run or a 25-mile bike ride – and be exhausted. After lunch, I’d reach for a Snickers to get me going again.

The toll on my body without Quaker Oatmeal? I felt heavy. Dragging. Lacking spark. And downright hungry all the time.

The thing about oatmeal is – it sticks to your ribs. (Mr. Breakfast gives 10 reasons to eat oatmeal, and explains how soluble fiber absorbs water, slowing down your digestive process. My thought, exactly!)

Why is oatmeal good for you? Besides slowing down your digestive process, it lowers your cholesterol, and it’s all-natural with no additives. Suffice to say, Quaker Oatmeal is way better for you than a Pop Tart.

But oatmeal doesn’t taste great… or does it? This recipe rocks!

How to make Quaker Oatmeal

Combine 1/3 cup Rice Dream with 1 1/3 cup water and a pinch of salt in a pot on the stove
Bring to a boil
Add just under 1 cup Quaker Oatmeal
Stir and reduce heat to a simmer
Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally
Add a dash of milk for flavor, if you like
The oatmeal is done when it’s a consistency you enjoy!

I top my Quaker oatmeal with half an apple, raisins, and cinnamon. Or sometimes peaches, or blueberries (a super food!)

When I eat Quaker Oatmeal for breakfast, I don’t get hungry mid-morning, and I have plenty of fuel for my midday workout. Plus enough energy to chase after my kids.

Give it a try!

  1. LOVE Oatmeal for breakfast. I always eat mine with a handful of raisins, some flaxseeds, and a dash of vanilla soy milk.

    YUM! :)

  2. And the topping possibilities are endless! Blueberries, strawberries, a bit of honey and walnuts, nut butter, and on and on. Haven’t we had this conversation before? :P

  3. it is the best. I put banana in mine and microwave it — i’m eating it at work. and well def don’t use 1 cup though! i stir in some peanut butter, and top it with raisins. Best part is I’ve weaned myself off of adding brown sugar!!!

  4. I love Quaker Oatmeal… I eat it with brown sugar and half and half. Mmmmmm…

  5. I like mine with walnuts or crushed almonds, raisins and cinnamon. Mmmmm, so good with a latte or a plain ‘ole hot cup of coffee.

If everyone ate and exercised like Dad’s does, our current health crisis and prevalence of chronic diseases would be much decreased. Thanks for the daily dose of prevention, Dad’s!

  6. Oatmeal, huh? :P
Will have to run the numbers on that, point values and all.. :D
However, there’s a toasted whole wheat English muffin/low fat cheese/ham/pineapple little thing I do (4 points only and very filling) for breakfast that you might like as well.. Variations include things like salsa, sliced apples or bean sprouts.. :) :) :)

  7. This post makes me laugh. No idea why.
I used to make oatmeal on the stove (no Quaker instant stuff here) every morning. It does give you energy and all that. But I’m so far out of practice generally breakfast is a cup or two of coffee. I’m bad I know.
But if you put the coffee with a piece of apple pie or something that’s good right? Fruit is good for you. ;)

  8. BTW – What is this ‘comment luv’ button? It’s checked for me. Should it be? I have no idea what exactly it is.

  9. Oh YUM!! I love oatmeal!! If I need to have a topper with it – it has to be dried cranberries, a little granola and a nice drizzle of honey over it! YUM!! Now I am hungry, I need my breakfast!!

And your right – it is filling. I tend not to snack if I have had oatmeal.

  10. I used to make oatmeal on the stove every morning while growing up in Chicago. It was a great breakfast on those cold winter days. Now it’s always exclusively a “winter food” for me so in the warmer months cold cereal (granola usually) or a shake starts my day.

  11. Andrea – maybe this post comes off funny since it’s so heartfelt! Does the Oatmeal Channel need a new host? I could audition!

I used to think Quaker oatmeal was old people’s food. But when I discovered it gives me serious fuel for my sports, I changed my tune.

As for commentLuv – that’s what inserts the “so-and-so’s last blog post..” with a link to your post. I see you tried it out with your second comment.

Great topping ideas, everyone! Oh, and yes, 1 cup of dried oats makes a big portion of Quaker oatmeal. I’m a big boy.

  12. I agree, oatmeal is a great way to stoke the furnace for the day!

  13. My girls and I LOVE oatmeal for breakfast. We add fresh berries (blue, black or straw) and I even add crushed walnuts for extra crunch. My favorite!!

I still have a mid-morning snack though. Peanuts or an apple before my lunch time workout.

    Good stuff! Enjoy your weekend!

  14. I have eaten it every day for years. With two big dollops of low fat yogurt and a spoonful of apricot jam. Sometimes in berry season I will add those too.

  15. I get my oats with the granola that I eat every morning. Same concept, but takes less time to whip up. I love summer fruits on it – peaches, nectarines, and berries of all sorts. It definitely keeps me going far longer than does toast or an English muffin.

  16. Hmmm I have not had the same experiences with oatmeal… I feel very full and bloated after eating it. and then I am hungry again an hour later..
I think it may not agree with me

  17. Okay, here’s my problem…I get the instant oatmeal (I’m not all fancy like you, David!) and that tiny packet is…TINY! So then I have to have two packets and mentally I feel like a cow b/c I had TWO!

But, I do have some oatmeal in the pantry, so just for you, I’m gonna give it another whirl tomorrow and see how I feel b/c as you saw…I’m eating healthy now. I ate green beans today and everything. :)

I love when you give advice. Keep it comin’!

  18. I’m also a big fan of oatmeal. Me and bunny eat it every day for breakfast. A BIG bowl that keeps us going for the morning, and keeps us regular with our number twos.

I use the “real” whole oats, and soak them the night before with raisins, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. It takes only a couple of minutes to cook the next morning (it’s the real deal instant oatmeal) and it tastes super sweet and yummy. Soaking it overnight makes it more easily digestible.

Notasoccermom – you might need to get the gluten free kind, if it makes you feel bloated.

  19. I’m hoping the instant oatmeal does the same trick. My mornings are crazy and I need to be able to make something quick. But, for more energy? I’ll try anything.

  20. Just stopping by to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day tomorrow! We single parents are really moms and dads to our kids, sometimes at the very same time. Perhaps it’s that kind of flexibility and willingness to go outside of our comfort zones that makes us all so sexy.

Enjoy your oats this weekend, Dad’s~

  21. Every time I eat oatmeal, I ask myself, why don’t I do tis more often. I love it with blackberries. But then again, I’d eat the sofa if it had blackberries on it. THanks for the reminder, DH.

  22. It’s awesome, it’s whole, it’s real food . . . add a little monounsaturated fat . . . even if few sprinkles of dark chocolate . . . and it’s perfect!

  23. Glad to see the topic of diet come up here. Oatmeal can be good; I wouldn’t call it necessary though. You can just swallow down some psyllium husk fiber each day to make sure you’re getting your fiber intake; does wonders for you as well. Some – I certainly don’t follow this to a T but try to get my fiber from dark leafy greens & fruit as much as possible- follow the paleo diet where oats/wheat/anything that can be made into bread/ is considered “bad” as it’s “cop-out calories”. They do provide health benefits when cooked, but their idea is, if you can’t eat it raw, don’t eat it (you wouldn’t eat a wheat stalk). That’s a bit extreme, I’ll admit, but giving yourself the occasional cheese w/ salad and even having the weekly bowl of pasta for lunch/dinner (in an Italian family, you can’t say no on Sundays…) won’t kill you!

  24. I don’t care how you make it, I can NOT eat oatmeal…I never have…gag. (no offense)

  26. Oatmeal is real food indeed. It’s easy and quick to prepare and things can get a bit hectic in the morning as a single mom to three teenagers. I’ve always enjoyed preparing it for my boys in the morning.

  27. just discover today… i can’t have my breakfast without coffee (w/creamer)… i dont like oatmeal becuase of its blunt taste… so what i did is i pour my no cook oatmeal in my coffee and wah lah… i did enjoy my healthy breakfast!!!
