My son graduates from Cal this spring, finished in four years. He too checked out schools back East where I'm from. Two points:

1. Don't underestimate the impact of cold, gray weather on kids who grew up in California.

2. Having "bargain" tuition at Berkely freed us up to spend intelligently on son's junior semester abroad. He had time of his life studying at Sorbonne and touring Europe. Money we would have spent on undergrad is now set aside for eventual MBA or law school.

Every family is different; but for our money, our son received a first-rate education for a fraction of an Ivy's cost.

Current senior at UC Berkeley here.

1. It does not take 5-6 years to graduate from UC Berkeley. I know some 5th year seniors(AKA Super Seniors) but never 6. If it takes you 6 years you are not going full time.

2. Stanfard(not a typo) sucks. A bunch of snooty kids who have inflated GPA's. Admission requirements are tough. Usually they only take the kids who had top notch grades in high school. The kids that do have those amazing grades tend to come from financially stable families which only perpetuates the cycle of the rich getting richer.

3. Your child WILL be taught by some amazing professors and NOT THEIR GRAD STUDENTS! You attend lecture with the professor who teaches the material(Grad students sit in also). Then once a week for about an hour you meet with one of his grad students in groups of 20 to ask questions and to clear up the material. You can only imagine what it would be like if a professor had to stop everytime one of the 150 students had a question.

Choosing a varsity is a big deal! I remember pouring over their pamphlets when I chose!!! I ended up at a little one in a varsity town - was cool :)

I am thinking she needs to choose the one away from home - THATS the point of going to varsity :O)

What a great time in your life and you are obviously very proud, as you should be of your daughter. Wherever she goes I'm sure she will have wonderful experience. It never hurts to save dad a little money though.
