Mark Sanford, Eliot Spitzer, Gavin Newsom – Move Over!

prostituteForget the Jon and Kate divorce indiscretions – there have been some crazy affairs going on with politicians of late.

South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford secretly left for Argentina to have a cry-fest with his secret lover. (Seems his wife knew about his mistress 5 months ago… huh? You can’t make this stuff up!) Upon returning to the US, Sanford gave a surreal press conference where he rambled on about hiking as a young boy, getting the soccer coach to act as chaperon, and saying how God’s law isn’t a “list of do’s and don’ts, just for the heck of do’s and don’ts.”

At some point, Gov. Sanford admitted to the affair, saying that “from a heart level, there was something real” between him and his mistress.

Then there was New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s scandalous rendezvous with call girl Ashley Dupre video. Don’t know whether his heart felt there was something real there or not.

And who can forget San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom’s affair with the wife of his friend and campaign manager? I’m thinking from a heart level, there was some real slime there.

(Not to condone affairs, but at least Gov. Sanford seemed to have fallen in love. He knew the woman for eight years before their friendship turned into something with real sparks. Of course, it’s a shame it happened at the expense of his wife.)

But all three of these politicians – Mark Sanford, Eliot Spitzer, and Gavin Newsom – need to move over and give it up for the Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi. Apparently, Berlusconi’s been having affairs for years, and dodging the criticism so well that they nicknamed him the “Teflon” Prime Minister.

Just one problem – this time, Berlusconi’s purported love interest was a prostitute.

Did Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi apologize to his wife and friends? No, the 72 year-old defended his manliness.

“I have never paid a woman. I never understood what the satisfaction is when you are missing the pleasure of conquest.”

Take that, Sanford, Spitzer, and Newsom!

And judging the fallout from Tiger Woods accident scandal and alleged affairs, he should take note, too!

  1. “Power is an aphrodisiac.”
Apparently, it’s a hallucinogen as well!!!
Have you ever seen Silvio Berlusconi??
Oh, and he’s paid for it..
One way or the other, we all pay.. :):))

  2. I love watching the GOP fall one pin at a time (it’s like slow motion bowling). And poor penisless Sarah, always stuck making fake outrage claims to get her name in the paper. Sanford gets nailed dipping his wick, Palin can do nothing but cry photo desecration.

I cannot help but wonder if all the GOP has left is Palin, will they just as GW Bush to run in 2012?

Ah, the party of valueless families, gotta love em.

  3. Maybe Silvio Berlusconi could give Sarah Palin some? That’d make the news.

  4. Paula, I don’t think being republican has anything to do with this. From what I have seen these “lack of descretions” have been equal for both parties.
Unless, BJs in the White House don’t count.

  5. Well, it’s like this: No matter accomplished, beautiful/handsome, smart, loving and giving you may be, if your spouse/partner chooses to have an affair (and it’s a very conscious choice), it has nothing to do with you and everything to do with his/her inability to know his/her own boundaries … and to stick to them!

I’ll be blogging about this next week — as the cheater and the cheatee.

Can’t compare Mr. Berlusconi and the recent U.S. infidelities, though; for the most part, affairs are not seen as devastating in Europe as they are here. Still, they are never “manly.”

  6. I agree with Kat. Men who cheat are just getting their, uh…egos stroked. The mistress isn’t talking about the bills, the kids and asking him to take out the trash, she’s making him feel like a king while the wife “made” him feel inadequate. Really it it he who feels inadequate all by himself otherwise he wouldn’t need to get the ego boost from anyone other than himself and by loving the woman he married instead of some homewrecking slut.

  7. Mindy, I think your average man or woman cheats out of a need to have their ego stroked or their self-esteem shored up.

These politicians though, it isn’t about getting egos stroked. It is about having egos that cause them to believe they are above reproach. Their egos aren’t fractured, they are over inflated.

As for paying for it, Sanford, Spitzer and Newsom pay, they pay dealy. Sad thing is people like them don’t usually learn from the consequences.

  8. To paint all politicians who have marital infidelity with the republican brush is ridiculously and intentionally misleading. Democrats…green party…independents are ALL in that group equally.

And under the heading of teflon…let’s not forget Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa…he totally got a pass.

The bits I have see of Spitzer and Sanford makes me think they have very little in common. Spitzer went after a very young prostitute. In a state where paying for sex is illegal. Sanford apparently fell in love with a woman he has known for quite a while. The only thing these men had in common was their occupation.

It makes me think about men in other occupations…such as WRITERS for example…who are drunkards and philanderers…we seem to accept their behavior. And we continue to have great respect for their work. smile.

Sanford’s media skewering will be far less with the passing of Fawcett and Jackson. Timing is everything.

  9. No, Dems have their fair share, but they aren’t sitting around trying to enforce “Biblical” family values, decide who can do what in the bedroom, gay bashing or acting horrified that a blow job ever happens. Thus, it’s the hypocracy in the party, not the deed I am laughing at.

  10. Yes, Paula, as Mark Sanford lustily crowed, he was one of the principal instigators of the impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton, to the point of insisting that Clinton resign. We shall soon see how Mr. Sanford approaches that issue now that it applies to himself.

The main thing that distinguishes the Republican adulterers and formerly-closeted fudge packers is their hypocrisy. Think of all the venom that Larry Craig spewed toward gay men and lesbians over the years… And Rush Limbaugh with his rants, only to be found to be an addict. That’s what makes the Republicans so…. special.

  11. i agree with paula, cheating would just be a matter within the family, except with Republicans they always harp on other peoples morals and values and try to force their code on everyone and they dont even follow their own code!

many people cheat, it is mostly the repubs that are hypocritical about it

  12. Paula got it right – many in the GOP are hypocritical to the extreme. Here are some quotes from Mark Sanford on why he voted to impeach Clinton: “I think what he did in this matter was reprehensible.” “This is very damaging stuff.” “If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he’d be gone.” (quotes taken from http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389×5915601 )

Which is why I understand the intent of David Letterman’s jokes about Sarah Palin (though he messed up by joking about her under 18 daughter http://dadshouseblog.com/2009/06/15/sarah-palin-david-letterman-jokes/ )

Katherine – writers are dunks and philanderers? I’m aghast! Makes me want to drink another mojito! Oh yeah, that was Hemingway’s favorite drink, wasn’t it… ha http://dadshouseblog.com/2008/08/29/mojito-recipe-hemingway-favorite-drink/

(Anything else I can link to in this comment? Something about Eliot Spitzer or Gavin Newsom? Nah…)

  13. We writers don’t drink to get drunk, we drink to smother the massive creative energy long enough to sleep.

  14. People have affairs for a number of reasons. Saying it is just one reason or another is oversimplifying the situation. And, wait, why is the other woman the only one called a “homewrecker slut”? The guy in the equation didn’t wreck a home or possibly two? Yeah, see how we can be?

As for the political people and their indiscretions, I think it is very sad for the families and children involved that they have to deal with the pain of infidelity and that it is exposed publicly. This is the piece I wish the press would understand. In their desire to get the most recent shocking story out first, they do some real damage to the innocents involved.

  15. The world of politics is fertile ground for confused morals and loyalties. Regardless of the party.

  16. that’s why I purposely stayed away from all those political people. they’re all crazies…

  17. I am always amazed at how little outcry their is! as if it is acceptable if you make enough money, or have enough power..and I guess somehow it is! UGH!!!

  18. Do all men have affairs in a long term marriage? It sure seems like it.

  19. I don’t understand why any of this is news. I don’t vote on politicians based on the state of their marriages. I couldn’t care less who they sleep with, it is between them and their wives.

  20. The only thing that really got me in this entire debaucle is that Gov. Sanford left his state afloat with absolutely no governance whatsoever. He broke his oath of office, as a sworn-in, paid official. You are not sworn in to be faithful to your marital partner. You are sworn in to take care of your state, and he left his state without a leader, which is inexcusable. Hypothetically, had a disaster somehow befallen his state, tornado or anything, Gov. Sanford would be even more screwed than he already is.

  21. The only reason I would give a hoot about what a pol is doing outside his marriage is because I figure if he’d betray the person he reportedly loves what would he do to further his political career? But even with that said, I don’t really care. I’ve been around the block enough times to know you shouldn’t judge.

  22. What I don’t get is why the press always makes a big deal out of it? I would rather focus on the real issues like say, I don’t know… war, poverty, healthcare? I don’t really care who’s doing what to whom. Well, as long as my tax dollars aren’t paying for it anyway!

You think they have a call girl fund in government? A line on the expense report maybe? Call Girl – CHECK

  23. So, when some individuals are hypocrits that makes ALL those associated with the group (republicans in this case) hypocrits. Good to know.
Now, does that go for ethnic groups, genders, etc, as well?
