A Single Mom and Her Super Cute Daughter

Ghirardelli sign San FranciscoThis past weekend, I hooked up for lunch with single mom blogger Mindy from Single Mom Says. Mindy was vacationing in San Francisco, along with her 4-year-old daughter. No, it wasn’t that sort of hookup. We ate lunch, hit the beach, ate chocolate. (Though, judging by the way some women react to chocolate, maybe it was that kind of hookup…)

Let me just say for the record, Mindy and her daughter are both attractive, smart, and charming as all get out.

Let me also say, Mindy’s four-year-old was so darn cute, I almost want to be a new dad again. (For the sake of brevity, this post is going to focus only on the daughter. But know I had fun with Mindy, too.)

The daughter had a tiny little soccer ball, about 1-inch diameter, and of course she showed it to me right off. (We bonded over soccer! My daughter would be proud.) At lunch, Mindy’s little girl hid the ball in the sugar bowl and asked me to find it. I tossed sugar packet after sugar packet onto the table (making me sort of a sugar daddy, eh?) Of course, I pretended the ball wasn’t there. And she called my bluff.

This cute girl was one smart kid. There were all sorts of types of sugar in the bowl, in different color packets: pink, blue, yellow, brown. I played dumb and called every color by a different name: purple, orange, red, black. She would have none of it. To put things in perspective, I didn’t know my colors until I was five. Yeah, maybe I was a slow learner. But this little girl not only knew every color, but she also had the confidence to call me on my shit. Girl has confidence!

I threw every sucker punch I knew at this kid. I misnamed things (that’s not a car, it’s a horse! No, it’s trash!) I told her Ghirardelli had run out of chocolate (she didn’t believe me). At the beach I told her if there’s no “sand” in her “sandals”, they’re just called “als”. She didn’t believe any of my teasing jokes. She knew the truth. She flat out told me I was wrong.

I love a confident woman like that! Even if she’s only three. (I know she likely learned all that from her mom. Good going, Mindy!)

The day reminded me how much I love love love interacting with kids.

Almost makes me want to be a daddy again.

  1. Three has got to be one of the funnest ages to hang with kids. They’ll correct you on colors and chocolate, while still fully believing in Barney, Big Bird and Santa.

  4. Maybe this was a way to open your eyes to what you thought you didn’t want. It sounds like it was a good way to see if you could be okay with dating someone with younger children and possibly be able to handle more than just dating them.

Sounds like it was a fun day!

What a fun lunch! I’m jealous, I totally want to to have lunch with Mindy! I really do love that age as well. Sounds like a good time.

  8. Ahhhhh, that’s so cute! I love watching/hearing about men willing to get down and play with the little ones. So many these days don’t! I also needed the reminder of how cute the litte ones are. After a few days of Little Man battling a tummy bug, I’d kinda forgotten they had a cute side lol!

  10. We had such a great day! Thanks so much for spending the afternoon with us and showing us around. I’m glad you enjoyed meeting L.O. as much as she enjoyed playing with you, ‘Davey’. Of course, I had fun too.

And the chocolate was really good. ;)

  17. What a sweet picture you paint! Sounds like a terrific outing.

You sound like you are quite the charmer with the little ones – THAT’s a great quality, too. Even if you don’t have any more of your own. Don’t hate me for saying that maybe someday you’ll get to use those awesome child-charming skills on some grandkids? ;)

  18. I forgot to mention that Mindy’s daughter has an incredible vocabulary. She totally impressed me with her word choice and sentence construction. Oh, and I notice I wrote that she’s 4 and she’s 3. Doh! She’s 3, about to turn 4. But hey, we’re all entitled to fudge the age number as we get older… haha.

ZenMom – I have said for a while that my next kid will be a grandkid. But I would totally date a woman with small children. I really enjoy interacting with kids.

Jason – we hit Ghirardelli, of course. We only had the afternoon, so kept things around north beach. We had fun. It was a banner day – would have been perfect for sailing! Next time…

Paula – too funny! And so true.

  19. Sounds like everyone had fun. I’m jealous of you David. I think I need to travel to the Bay area. It seems to be a good location for several bloggers I want to meet. But I’m planning it as a adult trip. I don’t need Dirt Bike Boy going west coast..lol

  20. nice!
should have been nice weather and good wind for sailing!

  21. Delightful post. Bright little ones are the BEST, and do remind us how cool they are. (Especially for short periods of time.) Let’s hear it for smart, confident, playful kids from smart, confident, playful parents! And I’m all for hanging out with them, and then giving them back… until grandkids… but please, if my teens are peeking – NOT for another 10 or 12 years!!

  23. Sugar daddy…ha ha! So would I have gotten a blog post too if I had brought my kids?! Just joking. Mindy’s little girl is at a wonderful age.

  24. Ilinap – I meant to blog about our dinner/cocktail get together, but I was traveling that week we met up. There are some other bloggers I haven’t blogged about. Basically, the meet-ups where alcohol was involved, I stayed mum on. (Hmmm… I think I should do a post…)

BigLittleWolf – my teens don’t want to know anything about my dating life, so they steer clear of my blog. The parenting stuff we talk about before I put posts up. As for the cocktails… I hope they aren’t taking notes on those!

  25. I think you’ll end up having another kid after all. What is really so bad about it? Kids are really nice to have around most of the time. ; )

I have my kids almost all grown and I went on a date the other day with a single dad of a 3 yr old boy. This guy may just be worth starting all over again.

  26. She’s sounds like the perfect kid — have a blast with her, then return her to mom …

Just kidding. It is so much fun when you can play with a little one again. I love the teen years, when you get to see who they’ve been becoming all along, but they’re just so darn adorable when they’re young (eh, that’s what keeps ‘em alive sometimes.)

  27. I had the good fortune to meet up with Mindy and her daughter later that day. Everything David says here is true. What an amazing little girl. I drew a little maze on a piece of paper to keep her occupied during dinner so Mindy and I could chat. “See the little rabbit? Try and help him find his way to this house.” She navigated the twists and turns with ease, then flipped the paper back at me saying,”And rabbits don’t live in houses. They live in holes in the ground!”

    She stole my heart.
