It’s Complicated!

After I blogged a review of Julie & Julia, Elizabeth from Irreverent: Musings on Faith, Love, Life and Politics said she wanted to hear my take on the Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin film, It’s Complicated.

Grab your lover, or your ex, or your lover who was your ex, and head on over to Silicon Valley Moms Blog for a single dad’s look at the film:

  1. I thought that the movie was ok. I didn’t think Alec Baldwin was very good and I couldn’t buy Steve Martin’s character. Maybe I have just seen too many of his other movies.

It wasn’t horrible, but I was glad that I didn’t have to pay full fare to see it.

  2. I knew that you would like it because, well…… you told me !

I absolutely loved the film and hope Meryl Streep wins an award for that. She was marvelous.

Thank God my parents never tried to get back together. What a disaster that would’ve been.

  3. I haven’t seen it yet, but I did guess that you would like it. My favorite line from the preview is when he says he wants to grow old together and she says, “We already grew old apart.”

So far the concensus is unanimous from everyone I talk to: It’s Complicated is fabulous.

FWIW ~ My kids are very happy their parents haven’t tried to get back together. But there was a brief moment, just a few months after I left their father, when my daughter said to me, “Mom, dad needs to get laid.” To which I said, “Well, I am definitely not available for that job!”

  4. I do love Meryl Streep, but I’ve heard mixed reviews on this one depending on what your own life is like… Haven’t seen it yet, but probably will. (I saw Julie & Julia after your review, and agreed with you completely.)

No question that human relationships are endlessly fascinating.

  6. I actually didn’t like the Steve Martin character. Too timid for my tastes. I LOVED Alex Baldwin’s over the top performance. But then again, I tend to let things hang out here on my blog. Man boobs and all!

  7. David, letting that emotional stuff hang out, giving us a bit of a window into your mind, is part of what makes you such an interesting character and a good blogger. It also helps that you know how to write.

I did actually comment on the review you wrote at the original site….:-)

  11. It was great to read your take on this movie David ~ I loved it!
There was one particular scene that really struck me, when Jake comes over in the morning and Janie invites him in, and off to the kitchen they go. She pulls out two glasses. For Jake she fills his glass with ice, OJ and Pellegrino ~ she hands him the glass ~ she knew just the way he liked his beverage. For herself, she goes to the water dispenser, it’s empty, while chatting with him she puts up a five gallon container. I thought it was sweet the way she took care of him and at the same time showed that she was a strong and independent woman who had learned to take care of herself too. It’s the little things we do, for the people that we love, that are special.

  12. My Man and I tried to see this movie on New Years Day but it was sold old by the time we got there. After reading your review I’m sorry we missed it! We saw Up in the Air instead and it was pretty good too but I will definitely make a point to go see It’s Complicated.

  15. Um, let’s look at the message here — man is unhappy with present wife and cheats on her to be with wife he cheated on.

  16. Kat – one great thing about this movie is it takes place 10 years after Jake cheated on Janie. And guess what – Janie admits that she had a roll in their marriage falling apart. It wasn’t just Jake cheating on her out of the blue. They both did things that led to the marriage being destroyed. Jake’s infidelity was merely the tipping point.

  17. I’m in the midst of going through my divorce. Several people suggested I not see this movie because of the subject matter, but I went with a friend and laughed out loud throughout the movie. There were only a couple of sensitive scenes for me, but I got through them okay ~ no tears. Two thumbs up!

  18. Sounds perfect for a date night with my manfriend. Thanks, Dad’s~

  19. It was a great movie. I just watched it couple of days ago. Meryl Streep is a great actress, so is Alec Baldwin. It’s not a deep movie yet the storyline is fun so it’s entertaining to watch.

  20. I THINK THE MOVIE LEFT YOU WONDERING IF SHE GOT BACK WITH ALEC BALDWIN OR STEVE MARTIN OR NEITHER….DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK SO?
