Broken TV on SuperBowl Weekend
Friday evening while I was watching an Italian Serie A soccer match on my DVR, my satellite box bit the dust. The TV screen went black. All attempts to revive the box failed.
In short – my TV was broken for SuperBowl weekend.
Yikes!
What’s a dad to do when his TV breaks? I called my dish company, pronto.
“Let’s take it through some tests to see if it’s really dead,” the service guy on the phone said.
“Trust me, it’s dead,” I said.
He had me plug the box into another outlet. Still broken.
He had me push and hold the reset button. Still broken.
He had me push and hold the power switch. Still broken.
“Looks like we’ll have to send you a new box,” the satellite service guy said.
Ya think?
“It’s SuperBowl weekend,” I reminded him.
“No worries, a replacement box will be there in 24 hours.”
Friday night with no TV – what’s a teen boy to do? My teen son called a buddy and they went to the YMCA to pump some iron. Turns out a bunch of their friends had the same idea. They lifted weights and had a pick-up basketball game. (And to think I initially gave him a hard time for wanting to join the YMCA. My bad! The YMCA is awesome for teens!!!!!)
Friday night with no TV – what’s a teen girl to do? My teen daughter had plans with friends, whether the TV worked or not. I swear, I barely see her anymore.
As for me, I caught up on work (I was out sick last week), had a vodka martini with a twist, and read some of Lori Gottlieb’s new book: Marry Him: The Case for Settling for Mr. Good Enough (Hey, I want to know what women are thinking when they’re out there sizing my good enough self up on the dating scene.)
Saturday morning with no TV – my kids helped cook breakfast! (How great it would be if the TV broke more often.) Then they helped me clean the house (WTF? I love ‘em!) Then my kids hung out with their friends, and I got more work done (finally caught up).
Saturday night with no TV – we watched a DVD (Schindler’s List. I’m giving my kids an education in great films.)
As for that 24 hour delivery? Didn’t happen.
Which brings me full circle to the dilemma in this post – what’s a dad to do when his TV box breaks on SuperBowl weekend?
We got ourselves invited to a party at a friend’s house!
And now I know – man’s best friend is not a dog. It’s a buddy with a working TV on SuperBowl weekend.
Congrats to the Saints!

Wow. That was a real nail biter! Glad you found your way around the dilemma. No Superbowl for me, but had some quality time with the kids so I can’t complain.
So glad to hear that you are feeling better and the kids are…well, awesome.
Rooting for you!

Good call – hope you took plenty of beer along
(ps women aren’t really thinking about Settling for Mr Good Enough – that’s why they immediately start to try to change a man as soon as they know him!!!!!!!)

Sorry about your TV! I hope you get your new box before the Olympics opening ceremony on Friday night!
I do not watch football..but I did watch the fourth quarter of this game. It was atually fun and like golf, I am beginning to enjoy watching it on TV. I was rooting for the Saints and they made lots of great plays that I was able to witness…the game changers! I think mardi gras is gonna last longer than usualthis year!

Now that I cannot believe. No TV? On Superbowl Sunday?
That was only because you were pulling for the Colts, y’know.
Hope you get back online soon. My internet has been in and out–I’d much rather have no electricity than no internet!!
Have a good Monday, Dads. Be well.

Who would have thought that no TV for a weekend actually did a Dad and his kids good..maybe the TV should be “out of order” more often. A good lesson for us all.

I moved from a house to an apartment, and I scheduled my service to be installed. The day arrived, no tech. I called Dish and they said it was cancelled. I asked by whom? the company I had it with, and that my apartment was under contract with a local company, so I called them… they said they haven’t done a install at my apartment complex in years and that they have no contract.. I call Dish… they said the landlord has to call Dish to remove the contract… my landlord says “we have no contract with Dish,” have Dish call us…
9th circle of Hell.
No TV in months, as I try and get someone to budge. Missed the game…

I don’t have a TV at my new place. My solution to this whole Superbowl frenzy was not giving a shit about the Superbowl. I worked out instead.
I will only watch Schindler’s list if I have the whole weekend to sulk and feel miserable.
My grandfather dated a woman that was on that list. I have her book, and know her story. I can’t watch that without wanting to break down.

It would probably do all of us some good to have a broken TV now and then. And friends with huge tv’s. :)

My DirecTV box died two years on SuperBowl Sunday. It was a major pain, but fortunately I was able to move our party to another house.

That is horrible timing!!! I cannot believe they didnt make it up to you somehow.
I know what it is like with teens and other plans.
Schindler’s List, I cannot bring myself to watch. I get so involved with the movies i watch that I am really concerned about that particular movies effect on my mood. But good for you exposing your kids to classics!
