Spinach for Breakfast

Posted on September 3rd, 2009 | 20 comments

My thirteen-year-old son woke up tired the other morning. Really tired, like it took an army of elephants to drag him out of bed. He could barely hold himself up over his Cheerios and Ovaltine hot cocoa.
“I’m really tired,” he said. (As if I hadn’t clued in to that fact.)
“Did you get enough sleep?” I [...]

Funny Surf Shop Story

Posted on July 29th, 2009 | 23 comments

My kids and I enjoy body surfing and boogie boarding at a favorite central California coast beach. Only problem, the water is usually too cold to stay in for long. My kids get around this by wearing shorty wetsuits (springsuits) that cover their bodies, thighs, and upper arms.
Great for them, but I wear boardshorts.
Annoyed that [...]

My Teen Daughter is a Grandma

Posted on July 28th, 2009 | 18 comments

My teen daughter is already a grandma. How can this be?

Are you planning a road trip this summer and need to find places to stay? I gotta tell you – Hotels.com rocks!
I just spent an evening booking rooms for a trip my daughter and I will take later this summer to tour east coast college campuses. I normally hate travel planning, but with Hotels.com I [...]

UC Berkeley Campus Rocks!

School’s out for the summer, and with my teen daughter now a high school senior, it’s time for her last round of college campus visits. She’s toured schools throughout California and on the Eastern seaboard. But despite living in the Bay Area, she never toured the UC Berkeley campus.
We fixed that last week. Can I [...]

Tivo Killed Family TV Night

Posted on June 16th, 2009 | 6 comments

When I was a kid growing up, I cherished TV nights I shared with my family. We’d cozy up on the couch and watch things like Monday Night Football or The Bionic Man.
My kids and I don’t have this tradition. Why not?
Head on over to the Silicon Valley Moms Blog where today’s Dad’s House post [...]

Giving Back Starts Young

Posted on May 19th, 2009 | 10 comments

Michelle Obama recently gave a commencement address to the pioneer graduating class from UC Merced, urging the new graduates to give back to their community.
Seems some Silicon Valley residents may not have gotten that memo.
Are kids in our community learning bad habits, or teaching the adults a thing or two about giving back?
Dad’s House wanders [...]
